Parent and toddler parking bays!!

I absolutely hate it when you go into a car park with 2000 or more spaces, and they only allow 10 parent and toddler spaces. You can never find one that is empty, but as your passing them you see eldery couples getting out their cars WITHOUT any children, and the only space you can find is miles away from the shop and its steaming down with rain!!!

No one likes parking next to cars with child seats in, because of the potential of getting your car door dented when the children swing their doors open!

So let us park in the parent's and toddler spaces, with room to open our doors, and your cars will b safe from sticky fingers and dents!

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

Yikes, you are getting into this forum lark babe...

but yr sooo right, hence I also NEVER park next to a people carrier or a Disco !!

Also why is it when you park the other end of Sainsbury carpark where no one else is, when you come out there's always some goon who has parked right next to you, but noone else around for miles !!

.. or is that just me ?

Oh and I hear at Castlepoint (a big shopping complex in Bournemouth and Mrs Troll's second home), they are now issueing fines for non disabled drivers parking in marked disabled bays.. maybe they should also impliment it for the parent/children spaces (all 10 of them!)

So you, who are presumably young and mobile, object to older people (who could very likely have ailments and infirmities and who may have real difficulties getting around) taking advantage of the "preferential" treatment, but you expect it for yourself and your offspring? Isn't having to fit a walker into a car at least as difficult as fitting in a stroller?

This is where the problem starts. "Oh, I deserve it because of my special status (having kids, being pregnant -- yes there are spaces put aside for pregnant women here, etc.) but I don't see why x person shoud get similar treatment." If that's the case, where are my wider parking spaces? I drive a small, relatively fuel efficient coupe (and not a huge SUV or people carrier). The problem is my doors are a bit on the long side, and I'd hate to get them damaged or damage somebody else's vehicle.

What do you think will happen now Nev, that this right wing guy has been elected? Will the 'feel' of France change?

PS Up the French!

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

I have to agree with Mrs Troll, and completely disagree with Toronto Spider.

The spaces are provided for Parents with Childern by the various shopping centres etc. Now, in this country, these parking lots are usually the private property of the relevant business, and the apportioning of parking spaces is entirely their choice.

There are invalid/disabled places for people with pyhsical disabilities, and the 'old couple' in question should probably apply for a disabled persons sticker.

If they have a problem with that, then maybe they should reconsider THEIR CHOICE to use the facilities/businesses in question.

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

What I always seem to see in Tesco/Sainbury car parks where I live are all the parent & child spaces taken up but the disabled spaces half empty! In this case I usually park at the other end of the car park if poss, but why can't supermarkets get a better ratio of parking bays for parents.

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

I am with you 100% MrsTroll

It is not only getting enough spaces but monitoring them. This goes for Disabled and parent and kids. I do also think there should be a "shoppers with nice motors" parking space too. This would not necessarily need to be near the entrance but allow for longer doors more space at the sid etc.

Maybe that is a different subject altogether.

"shoppers and nice motors" parking spaces Good idea Jeffrz but cant see that happening any time soon. lol

Parent and toddler spaces dont have to be close to shops doors either, but giving us some more spaces would be great.

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

At my local tesco's there is a row of the people with children bays, and there also 2 normal bays in that row, and a bay for motor cycles. Now a couple of weeks ago I park in one of the free bays and as I got out of the car I was accosted by a over-righteous parent asking if I was aware that I'd parked in a bay reserved for people like him. I tried to explain he was in the wrong, that it was a normal bay, but he was an arse. Eventually I moved my car, not because he was right, not because I felt bad for him having to manage his children, but because I'd just picked up my new GT not 2 hours before, and had a concern over vandalism from this sanctimonious parent.

It bugs me that people are so precious about their children, and their rights to comfort as a parent. You had the damn kids knowing what a burden they would be. Just like th old smoking argument, why do I have to make a sacrifice to indulge a parents selfishness?

Same goes for baby on board signs. I'm already driving not to have a crash because I love my car to death. I'm not going to try harder because your most precious possessions are in the back. I'm already at 100% avoidance. I like kids, I don't have any, but I love my nephew, so I get the parenty thing (as much as I can ATM). Still, I don't have the same affection for other peoples kids.

If someone's suggesting I have to avoid parking next to someone with kid seats, well I buy that, because thats the way the world has gone. But I hope, I really hope that if someones at least got an Alfa, they've educated their kids NOT to swing open doors, and if the kids are too thick to learn, leave the child locks on the door until they do learn to treat the car with respect!

Anyone watch that programme about the Middle Classes on BBC 2 last night? (BBC 4 on 2 or whatever they call it) It was brilliant.

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

Chrispy..

You appear to have put all parents into one category, purely on the basis you was confronted by one father in tesco's.

Not all parents are like you seem to think. Yes i do have child locks on my Alfa which are always on, the children can not open their car doors, and i never hit other people's car's when opening the door.

As a parent yes they are our "most precious possessions", but you dont have them, and therefore would not know.

We don't ask for special privilege's, just a parking space where it is easier to open our car doors, even if this space is right at the back of car park!!!!!!

Fair enough Mrs.Troll. I don't actually lump all parents together, I was just a bit off on one. It's the rant room after all. But it is the more prevalent attitude in my experience. And it's none to pleasant to be confronted like that by someone who's just being selfish.

Also I'm glad you control the kids and their doors. The last bit I posted about the doors wasn't aimed at you, just a general thing.

I don't actually know what it's like to have kids, true, but my uncle status takes me pretty close I think. Plus I was one.

Re: Parent and toddler parking bays!!

It is good to have a rant, and it did come across as if you "lumped" all parents together, but i am pleased you don't!

Yes being an uncle kinda brings you close to being a parent, but without all the hassle ( y wasn't i just an auntie!) lol

Ah yes, and [email protected], forgot about those

Seriously though, I don't have a problem with anyone who parks in p+c bays. I worry about my car being vandalised also, which is why I only shop late at night to avoid crammed car parks. But if you have to shop during the day, I can see why someone might park in p+c, although I don't personally.
