Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

Why is it? Price of convenience in my opinion. No different to using a cash machine not affiliated with a bank and being charged £1.50 for it, you still use it cos it's inconvenient not to.

The problem is there is no other option for the patient, its pay up or nothing..not like at home where you can switch your service provider..

Wasn't that long ago that there weren't these things at all in hospitals, who do you think pays for it?

Yes, especially when they rent out hospital roof-
space for GSM basestations. Which, I think you'll
find, are slightly more powerful.

True, but as an ex-telecoms person if you've got to be near a base station, it's best to be right underneath it: the greatest signal intensity from the antennas hits the deck about 150 to 300m away from the base station (depending on configuration). Also, there is still quite a bit of debate about which situation is "best": being near a base station or having a mobile clamped to your head. Then there's the question of TV & radio arrays, which are waaaaaay more powerful than mobile phone sites

Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

Seems to me you have a choice...take it or leave it. I have heard that the mobile phone 'issue' could be coming to an end soon and you will be able to use them, then it will be goodbye to Patientline.
Talking of rip-offs, I read that the NHS made millions (about £5m) out of parking fees last year !

Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

At the BBC's big Daventry transmitter, you can stand in the field amongst the array with a fluorescent tube in your hand and if you hold it the right way round, it will glow faintly!

As Nev said though, it has been disproven that mobiles can affect life-support gear, but of course if you used your mobile, you wouldn't be putting any money into the NHS's meagre coffers (or megabucks into the provider's pockets). It's all complete ********, but there you go, modern Britain...

Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

Just think, with a *****-off base station on the roof, they could put it above the X-Ray dept and have a body-sized gap in the shielding. Lay the patient down underneath and voila!...free X-Rays! I wonder if I could patent that...

As already said, you have a choice whether to use the phones or not... What's more annoying is the price you have to pay for parking in a hospital car park! That you have no choice over, especially if you're visiting or just having a treatment like me with acupuncture.

No, you don't really have a choice, a choice would be to have the old phone trolley available, at phone box rates!

Exactly! Part of my old role was to try and convince planning authorities and local pressure groups that the mobile base station we were hoping to build would not irradiate their school / hospital / home.

It was one that we would have loved to mention, but no-one would have it! Mobile 'phones = bad, TV = good

Ah, those were the days. Anyway, sorry for O/T.

Well, you don't really. Unless you don't talk to anyone. I personally think it's pretty scandalous that they don't let you use mobiles.

That is very annoying. It cost my family an absolute fortune when my Mum was in intensive care for a couple of weeks. The cost was truly staggering. Came to a few hundred quid.

Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

I'm currently sitting about 2 feet away from a mobile cell site which has a transmitter for every cellphone network in the uk in it. On the roof of our sodding building

Wonder if i'll ever have children? (and how many heads they'll have)

Re: Filthy Robbing *******s !!!!

nev you already do get a free x ray with your flight,i forget the exact figure but spending an 8hr long haul flight at 30000 feet is the equivelent of 5 hospital X rays ill go an look up the figures, it is quite scary

re mobile phones the real reason you cant use them at a petrol station for instance is that they can affect the rate at which the dials on the pump move so you can end up getting more fuel for your money( a tecky at o2 told me this) and bugger all to do with the fire risk, the only way a phone is a fire risk is maybe possibly if fuel vapour somehow got into your phone which had a fault which caused a spark, which isnt likely is it, also the fuel/ air mix would have to be spot on at the exact moment of a spark which i doubt has ever happened

ok ive just looked up the research and a 8r hr flight at 30000ft is the equivelent to 1 chest x ray, not a consideration for most people, but if i were aircrew id be worried
