Credit Card copied....AGAIN!!!

I'm loosing faith in Credit Cards.. for the 4th time in 11 years i am experiencing fraud in relation to my Visa... I just can't belive how common it's become..

1996 Brussels:
A restaurant Waiter (later arrested) copied credit cards off the guest. incl. my Company Visa. Some £400 worth of goods and services was purchased on the card.

1999 Copenhagen
A sophisticated gang had placed a phony custom built keypad on top of the original hole-in-the-wall in the centre of Copenhagen Some 200 cards including my personal Visa was copied. One evening, I was advised by my bank over the phone, that the gang had been arrested, my card had been copied but luckily not used yet.

2000 New York City
An even more sophisticated gang monitored the electronic signal and videotaped the hole-in-the-wall. About £300 was stolen from my personal account by using a cloned Visa card. They later arrested most of the gang..

2007
Today a Belgian based "Consultancy company" (i found out via my bank) have stolen 310 euro from my company account. Apparently my Visa (yes Visa once again) have been copied...

It's not like i am not being carefull.. i try to think twice before i use credit cards on the web, and after that first restaurant incident, i rarely use credit cards when eating out, but prefer cash.. I never use my credit cards when travelling outside Western Europe/North America unless i trust the Hotel/shops...What more can you do!!!

@Peter: bad luck
BTW will be e-mailing you tommorrow about following up on ring bookings, exhaust shipping, and possibly brake pad stuff.
The last week has been hectic with lots of renovations ongoing in my house so my brain has been a bit scambled!

Cheers,

I must lead a charmed life, I haven't even been scammed on ebay yet! Seriously though, it's very worrying, even if you keep your wits about you, nothing you can do!

I do the same, and look at top plate for cameras.
Don`t like the police/civvie cctv camera across the road from my bank,it always appears to be watching you,and if you put your back to them & cover the buttons with one hand,it makes you look suspicious but fingers crossed

Re: Credit Card copied....AGAIN!!!

I've never worried about this.

Used to happen a lot when I was
travelling more than I do now.

And it was with my UK cards,
never the French ones.

Anyway, "Visa will pay"

Re: Credit Card copied....AGAIN!!!

The Mrs had her card cloned...they tried to buy £2000 of sim cards from a moody shop in North London, The bank said no, so they tried for £900, and gues what...the bank say ..yes, not only do they say yes, but they kindly increase my wife's overdraft (without her permission) agreement to cover the purchase. We only found out about it because Lloyds Bank Fraud dept had been watching the banking that shop had been doing, and contacted us to see if it was a genuine transaction ! Good work you might think....ah but no but yes but no but ..You see she banked with Barclays not Lloyds..Ta daaah those well known VISA partners, suffice to say we no longer bank at the sign of the Seasick Parrot.

Re: Credit Card copied....AGAIN!!!

I bank with hsbc and they recently put a stop on my card because my purchasing pattern had triggered an electronic security lock. In a way I'm glad that they have this sort of thing in place, took a 2 minute phone call to get it functional again and i'd rather have that inconvenience than having to fill out a load of forms for the insurance on the card

agree.

I had about 800 notes lifted from my current account. When I noticed and told the bank that, given my typical spending habits, it was highly unusual for me to withdraw 400 notes at 11.59pm and then 400 notes at 00.12am in some shi5 hole part of London when I live in Surrey, they agreed and gave me the money back.

Just wish that they'd holted the transaction at source, mind...

Funny how banks can track your spending habits to alert you to more loans, but they can't alert you to out of character withdrawals from cash machines. Hmmm, what can we read into that, I wonder...
