Re: Another fuel tax rise planed!!

Unfortunately I don't think the government will listen to petitions.

We need proper protests, like blockades.

At the moment everything is going up in real terms, except for wages and interest on savings.

Many people are struggling now, even if they are lucky enough to still have a job and this will push some of them over the edge.

Time for a general election.

Also on top of this potential hike, the price of fuel will go up again when the VAT rises back to 17.5% at the end of the year.

Do you remember how Tony made a big thing of listening to 'the people' when he came to power. I think he even had some kind of dedicated phone line. How things change.

But there is a difference between just listening, and listening and acting.

OK hands up all those who honestly think David Cameron will cut fuel tax without raising tax elsewhere when he gets in?

I think that is right. He's throwing taxpayers' cash around like a man possessed supporting banks, foreign-owned industries, MPs' ever-rising expenses not forgetting granting inflation-busting pay rises and enhanced pensions for the public sector. Meanwhile, the inflow of taxes must be reducing. Jobless numbers are rising, sales of everything are down 20-35% on average, more co's are posting losses (so no profits to tax), individuals are driving less, fewer flights are being taken for business or pleasure, even tobacco sales have slowed a bit.

All his revenue streams are dwindling and we are the softest touch in the market. When oil was at its height he will have drooled seeing that we still had to pay for fuel. I bet it even crossed their minds to increase fuel duty by 10-15 ppl even if only as a "temporary" measure.

Not sure, I think he will cut public spending/wastage (delete as appropriate)

Taxing people at the moment is not a good thing, although people will accept it as a nessesary evil to get the country out of this mess more when the economy picks up. But only if wastage is cut at the same time.

I also think that DC will be able to get away with taxing more than GB, at least initially.

Because it wasn't him who got us into this mess, and he needs to take drastic steps to get us out of it.

I hope the tax rises are targeted and fair.

Are we forgetting that fuel duty was higher than it is now when the Conservatives were last in??

I'll stay out of this until the budget is released, to many political war games at present and all based upon speculation.

Careful. Use of that kind of seditious talk
can get people branded as a loony[sic], leftie or even scum.

We're ****ed whatever. They could as a token gesture keep petrol prices low, but given thanks to the banks and associated bail outs we'll be stung one way or another.

Also prices are already creeping up thanks to the oil companies cutting back production.

Re: Another fuel tax rise planed!!

Well if they keep putting prices up demand will fall.

I have already invested in a smaller weekly runabout, and I am sure others will too.

I wonder how we managed in the 1970's and 1980's when most of the reps drove ford cortina's and Vauxhall chavaliers that did around 25-30mpg at best, on 4 star.

I'm with Ray, I guess? It really doesn't bother me one iota one way or the other. When I put my first half gallon in the tank of my 250 Beeza Empire Star in 1956, I thought this will be an expensive animal to feed! Some fifty years on I still feel the same.

Crude is sat at $52 a barrel, and we are still paying more per litre than the last time it was a $52 per barrel......

On 50 of petrol you are paying nearly 33 in tax....please dont tell me that is fair

Possibly blockades are the answer, the issue we have in the UK is apathy, we, and i am guilty of this, are happy to moan about it, but when it comes to action, it doesn't happen, we are almost waiting for someone else to fight our battles.

I do what i always do, fire off a letter to my MP, doubt that will do any good

Maybe the French farmers have got the right idea at times

i'll get me coat :coat:

Whilst not wishing to **** on anyone's bonfire about rip-off Britain etc.

Have a look at this:

AA Roadwatch : European Petrol Prices

Those French farmers must be full of **** and wind because they appear to be paying 20p a litre more than us.

They only appear as high as they are because the pound is worth so little against the Euro don't they?

The AA are having a laugh, I pay way more than that!

Anyway we don't pay road tax.
That was the last concession the tanker drivers
won for the people.

1.30euro when we drove through france Little change going into Belgium and then the Netherlands.

It's quite hard to get to grips with the currency effects.
The dollar is 'strong' at present compared with sterling and sterling is weak compared with the Euro, but the dollar has been gaining ground against the Euro which means they (Euro countries) are in a similar boat to us.
The rates change at such pace it's difficult to know exactly whats going on.
