I've had it with treasure island syndrome

I'm fed up of having to subsidise robbing [email protected]

I'm trying to purchase a technical manual from a supplier in the states. One book I'm after is only $11. Amazon won't let me place the order and keeps redirecting me to the UK site. The cheapest version in the UK is £28 (z shops).

Barnes and Noble USA got the order at $12.50 plus shipping.

Why should I pay over twice the price for an item?

These UK business' will go out of action. They've damn well earned it.

Be careful you don't get clobbered with some import duty when it is delivered. Fed Ex and some other firms have a habit of not informing you when you sign for the goods, but then they send you another invoice a few weeks later.
I think it is our governments way of telling us, that free markets and competition only apply to a chosen few.

Yes and FedEx randomly make up a "Vatable" value ... which is usually alot higher then what you actually paid, plus they add an admin fee ... I bought a new laptop battery from China, I paid £40 ... then £19 to FedEx!!!!

Ordering goods from overseas can be a risky and expensive business, not because of the company selling the item but the rip off merchants who govern us and the courier firms making from it as well.

Sometimes better to bite the bullet and order from the UK, it may well be at a higher price but there will be no hidden costs and delays.

PS. I love Barnes and Noble, used to haunt their shops when I lived in the USA.

Normally below £17.50 should not attract VAT and duty, with added handling charge.

Truly is the wonder of the internet, findong how much cheaper you can get stuff abroad, then working out how best to get your hands on it! Pity the economy has stuffed up the sterling / dollar exchange rate so much

Friendly US eBay retailers will mark a package as a 'gift' to stop you getting excess customs charges.

It does suck though. I once bought a spoiler that was only available for £380 here for $160 on eBay. Even with shipping etc it still worked out cheap as chips.
