Sex education for 7 year olds

Just seen on the BBC news that they may start teaching children in primary schools sex education. I think the emphasis will be on relationships at this early age but I still cannot believe what i heard.

To me it is a no brainer. if they still believe in Father Christmas spare them the sex education and let them enjoy their childhood

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

7 is very young. They should start teaching them about the facts of life when they start getting "Urges".

I think for most kids that is about 12-13 years old.

Most normal kids with working class families.

The problem is that there are to many 'kids' these days that started smoking at the age of 10, having sex at 11 and banged up by 13 for violence/drug offences. And the parents seem to think it's normal.

But then, would education have an impact on these type of kids/families???

Oh dear.

Is this the same kind of story McCain's lot were trying to
use to smear Obama with recently. Saying Obama supported
sex education for 5 year old.

(In context what it meant was to explain to 5 year olds how
about kiddie fiddlers and what they should do if approached
inappropriately. Maybe that kind of education could
be useful to a 5 or 7 year old? )

Dunno about the rest of the country but I first had sex education when I was 9/10 first year of secondary school, it was more about the biological stuff than emotional and social repercussions though.

I remember us watching a video of a Baby being born and when we all got up at the end one of my mates fainted and the chairs went everywhere

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

Most countries in Europe have a far more relaxed attitude to sex and sexuality than we do in Britain. They teach it more openly, and discuss with families more readily, with no embarrasment.

We hide it away like a sordid little secret, something to be ashamed of. Something forbidden.

And we're the ones with the massive rates of STD's and teen pregnancies.

So start teaching them when? At 13? or 14?

By then a decent number of kids have already found out about these things, by doing them.

So true. I was given sex ed in my last year (iirc) of primary school, I seem to recall naked parents and children walking around a house!
"This bit goes in here and a little baby pops out 9 months later" was about as far as it went!

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

maybe 7's a bit young, but should be more education/discussion - make our nation less prude-ish.

Think my school went through it when I was 10.

Perhaps it'd work best by doing it twice, once before they have hormonal urges and then a few years later when they do

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

My kids' school called us in as they were going to start "sex" education at about 7. (This was about 12 years ago BTW).

What they had decided to do was actually a sort of holistic approach, where they talked to the kids about relationships...with friends, family etc. It was very very gentle stuff, about respecting other people and themselves...and learning how to say no, if they felt uncomfortable with anything.

There was no intention of talking about sexual relationships at that early age...but more a sort of preparing the way for when they were older. I personally think parents are the best people to talk to their kids when they get a littile older.

I think one of the things the school did do which I thought was great, was taught children about appropriate and inappropriate behaviour of adults and who you could speak to if something upset you.

Perhaps if education authorities actually explained more clearly what they were intending, it would put a stop to some of these headlines clearly intended to shock us.

Thanks Rodz

Like most people on here, I think sex education for 7 years olds is a dreadful idea...but I think education authorities sometimes do themselves no favours with how they present things.

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

Yes - when I first heard this I was horrified - I have a 5 year old. However, if you actually read more about it they're not teaching 'sex education' to 7 year olds; but about relationships. Personally I haven't got a problem with that

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

It's never too early, in my opinion, to teach kids about the things they are asking questions about, at their level, and with an eye to educating them towards a respectful society.
Sex-edu is probably not a term which will get much applause, but if taken in the spirit of Lynn's message I think this is a good thing.

My wife works with teen mothers - these got their relational/sexual/communication education too late, and too little of it.

Re: Sex education for 7 year olds

Surely it is better for kids to learn about these things in a proper managed environment, than from the god awful crap on TV.
