Why is diesel more expensive?

Serious question - doesn't petrol have to go through more refining ect? So should be more expensive.

Even if not, why is diesel 10p per litre more expensive?

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

Its commonly known as a "con", years ago Diesel was cheaper than petrol because hardly anyone used it. Now because its as high a demand as petrol the oil companies and greedy goverment have stitched the price up to screw the users. Like most things on this wonderful island its a big con. I always thought Maggie Thatchers goverment were the greediest money hungry, tax grabbing, conning thieves, however new Labour have surpassed her with ease.

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

I thought that a given amount of crude oil contained less diesel than it does petrol, hence the price difference.

The amount of tax on Diesel and petrol is the same. I think thats pretty fair as they are both probably about as bad for the environment as each other.

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

It's so those of us with proper (petrol) engines can enjoy our instant throttle response and aural treat without worrying that we are losing out financially to diesels

In my wifes Citroen you send a request in writing to the turbo asking it to spin up and get a response several days later

I think the price of diesel is just down to supply and demand. To an extent supply is fixed, more people have switched onto it so the price has gone up. This is an economic phenomena, not someone being 'greedy', it happens with every commodity for sale. If you want to see the price come down, then stop buying so much. For the same reason I do not buy popcorn at the cinema

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

It all comes down to what people are willing to pay ... you get better mpg out of diesel therefore people are willing to pay more for it ... the same as hairdressers ... women are willing to pay £40+ for a haircut so that is what they get charged, men on the other hand are NOT and as such their haircuts cost a lot less even though the same time/effort goes into the cut ...

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

My old man answered this for me a few years ago, and being a senior manager for Kuwait Oil Company I would hope he got the answer right
There are various factors regarding refining costs and return per litre of crude but the long and short of it is that diesel is cheaper to produce and therefore should be cheaper to buy

i always thought diesel was cheaper to produce because it requires less refining, being as it is a dirty sludge made from peat

I believe you can actually buy a unit that you pour your used vegetable oil in and it cleans it and turns it into something a little better for deisel engines etruk.com - Domestic Products

They use new oil, they go to the supermarket and buy a trolly full at a time and I think they mix it 5 parts oil to 1 diesel or something like that.

Re: Why is diesel more expensive?

The problem is pretty much simply supply and demand. Historcally demand for petrol was way higher than diesel and so refineries are set up to distil out more petrol fraction than heavier diesel. You can't just flick a switch and change what you get out of the pipe but new plants are being constructed to deal with the increased demand for derv and the problem should level off when they come online in a few years.

I think Petrol and Diesel are about equally as bad. Diesels don't make as much co2 per mile travelled but they do produce more particulates.

Something like the following....

A modern high conversion fuels refinery will end up producing about 20 gallons of unleaded gasoline from a barrel of crude oil and about 10 gallons of low sulfur diesel. This yield pattern can be shifted somewhat toward diesel and away from gasoline if that is the fuels market the refinery is operating in.
