Why do they do this?

On Friday in torrential rain (of course) I am on the M2 slowing for ponding water to avoid aquaplaning. My attention is then taken from these dangerous road conditions to an illuminated gantry sign saying....

To M25/M26 junction 22 Mins

Is it me?

What type of cretin thought that distracting a driver to tell him something that may well be wrong (and for some will be little short of a challenge) is a good idea?

Originally these signs gave sensible immediate advice (accident ahead, high winds on bridge).

Then we had general nannying (don't drink and drive, wash your hands after a wee etc)

Now this......

Grrrrrrrr

I hate the way people slow down to read the signs.

How ******' bad is people's eyesight that they can't read them as they approach at 70-80mph?

I creep into the hard shoulder with the hazards on, so I can read them, then gently ease back into the flow. Time to stop motoring you reckon?

i like them, if its 22 miles and 20 minutes then you know theres no ****ty traffic.

if it was 22 miles and 60 minutes id be getting off earlier and having a nap.

Re: Why do they do this?

I like them too, if it says "accident ahead" or "congestion" I don't know how bad it is ... if it gives me an indication of the delay I know whether it's worth taking a alternate route ...

My old Dad packed up motoring on his seventieth birthday, and if I feel I've had sufficient, I'll do likewise: Good job I've a twelve year younger Chauffeuse? Better anyway as a passenger,I can have a doze.:

I think that some of the oldies on the road at the moment are dangerous and should pack up. Not saying that it just the oldies that are bad drivers either it just the speed they go, reaction times and the fact that they seem totally oblivious to everything that is going on around them. Twelve years younger eh ZF? Nice one! "Cash back!" as the great Alan Partridge would say

Re: Why do they do this?

Difficult to generalise on this subject though, as individuals vary so much, especially on the aging front, and whether they are still capably safe to drive or not?

I would be open to any assessment of my general driving standard at 68, as I don't believe the age factor is the only ingredient to being a safe driver, assuming your physical/mental state is up to a reasonable standard. No boom-box exhausts, spot-weld shattering amps ICE gear for me, nor mobile clamped to my lugole', fags, booze, space stuff either, or that ubiquitous baseball cap. Just six decades plus eight, so far to disadvantage me.
