On The Buses

Anyone actually use the bus?

Funny article in Private Eye explaining that a lot
of large UK bus Cos are putting up ticket prices
to cover increases in fuel "costs" even though
they managed to cleverly secure fuel deals
at below last years prices before the current bump.

Nice one!

Thumbs Up Re: On The Buses

If I'm travelling to Belfast I use the bus, new roads with dedicated bus lanes make it far quicker and less stressful to take the bus than drive. By the time petrol prices and car parking charges are taken into the equation it's the bus for me every time!

Re: On The Buses

Down here in Kent where I live, it costs £5 for a round trip of four miles by bus, that isn't what I call great value.

Re: On The Buses

Regional TAM buses are €1 each way per trip.
(e.g. Nice - Cannes or Sophia - Aeroport)

There is now a free bus service from Antibes
to Sophia Antipolis as well as a circle route around
the parc itself.

I still drive.

Re: On The Buses

Use the bus if I intend to consume some ale; or if I have to get back to work and retrive my car... there are 4 bars next door, sometimes car gets left behind of an evening...

Re: On The Buses

Part of my job is reimbursing fares for customer we ask to attend the office - fares in our area have gone up by roughly 5% recently.

I never use the bus. Dirty and slow. My round trip to work is about 3 miles but is £2.20 per day if I take the bus.

Re: On The Buses

I theoretically could take the bus to work, but I work at a school, so the only bus at the right time in the morning is the service bus used by the school kids (it was hell when I was there, **** knows how it would be now). The seven miles door to door would take half an hour, the 146 express takes ten minutes...

Re: On The Buses

The Chinese will think that all London buses open up to reveal a fecking hedge inside.
There was an item on radio 4 yesterday about the amount of fleas, bedbugs and headlice found on bus seats.
Buses, like trains are fine - its just the travelling public that spoils the jopurney.

Re: On The Buses

I can't stand buses, and before anyone jumps on me nothing to do with children or OAP's on them... OK?

In London I just use train and tube to get as close as I can and then walk. Where I live I dread to think how much a journey to my parents would cost and again I would sooner walk. The local council have put a fasttrack bus system in place with dedicated roads to bluewater and business park, this does seem to have taken off and work well but doesn't go anywhere I need to

Re: On The Buses

When I used to go up to London to skive off
research something or other, I used to get a TravelCard
from Brighton that'd let you train up, travel around on Tube
and hopping on/off the back of the Routemasters all day
shopping "researching" along Tottenham Court Road
and Oxford St etc. Brilliant.

Wouldn't cross my mind to do that these days.

Just about sums it up.

I know I should use public transport far more than I do; it's just that I don't have the time, the money or the jabs to do so.

I use the train into London and will use the tube to get about in London, but buses seem pointless. It takes me 20 minutes to get from Charing cross to work, by bus it would be longer.

Re: On The Buses

I know the guy who did the deal on fuel price for one company and he's one smart cookie. I'm sure he did what he is paid to do.

Any subsequent price shenanigans certainly won't help tempt me out of the driving seat.

I try to avoid any form of public transportation, even here in super efficient Japan, if I can.

When the choice is public transport or a Maserati Gransport, that's understandable

I found it to be a revelation, especially the shinkansen. Perhaps it was just the novelty value, I don't know: clean, punctual, generally quick. Never tried the full monte rush-hour-pack-them-in thing though.

Best bit was waiting on the platform - I really didn't know why the locals all ined up at those marked places on the platform. In my ignorance, I assumed that this was just their orderly and disciplined way of doing things (like not crossing a completely empty road until the crossing tells you to). Then the train arrived, the doors opened and I quickly found out...
