1&1 Internet ...

I'm absolutely fuming ... about 6 months ago I set up a website for my wife, first call was 1&1 internet as they have several packages that basically give you an eShop ready to go, so I signed up (you couldn't test out what you get until you pay some money), within a couple of hours (and a couple of phone calls to tech support) I quickly realised that the product wasn't what we wanted so I moved the domain to another provider and generated the website myself. When I moved the domain I obviously canceled my contract with 1&1 but I obviously had to pay up for the minimum period ... not that happy about it, but I accepted that I had signed up so I didn't really have a leg to stand on.

... got an email last night with an Invoice from 1&1 for my next billing period!!!! ... but I'm sure I'd canceled it, so went through my old emails (I keep ALL my emails) and sure enough I had an email from them confirming my cancellation, so I tried giving them a ring but it was outside office hours so I sent them an email ...

... got a reply this morning (can't fault them for there response time), stating that I had only canceled part of the contract and that the invoice was not sent in error and I wouldn't get refund ... I'm 100% sure that I DID cancel the entire contract, in fact I'm sure I went onto there website after it was canceled and was happy that it was ... but the trouble with there online system is that they keep all the records and there is no way of recording the requests, and the emails they send are so wooley that they don't actually commit themselves to anything ...

... they've caught me out like this before a few years back too, I think it's there standard business practise as a way of getting more money out of people ... in fact that time the debit card I had registered with them had expired, so instead of contacting me directly they put it straight into the hands of a debt collector, thus making me pay an extra £25 for a service that I had canceled ...

... if you use 1&1 make sure when you cancel the contract you get in writing that EVERYTHING with them is canceled...

I'm so p*ssed off (even though it was only about £17)

Also did you know that fasthosts and 1&1 are owned by the same group.

I didn't know that ... (but then these day's probably the same company owns virtually all the providers) ... I would give fasthosts about 6 out of 10 ... not the best, but they seem ok for basic hosting (although I've not tried to cancel my contract or do anything out of the ordinary with them yet ...)

I am with NetPivotal, whilst the uptime and general running is quite good, the support team (all ticket based) are fudging useless - never every get an apology for the stupid mistakes they make, they never re-read the tickets to see what they have already done, they make changes that do not stick for some reason...could go on..

1& Internet did exactly this to me. I kicked up a stink and got some money off but still had to part with some cash.

I think you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting.

I wouldn't touch fasthosts with their security record!

Re: 1&1 Internet ...

This sort of thing is becoming more prevalent. Last July I cancelled my landline calls with Talk Talk (Carphone Warehouse). The following month I received a letter telling me that they could not take any money and that I was going to be charged for the statement and the letter, despite the fact that the statement showed zero calls. They had stopped the direct debit, and I called them up and told them this. I also said that I would not be paying for the zero statement, because I was no longer with them. One month later, I noticed that Carphone Warehouse had started the direct debit again without my permission and debited more charges. I still have not managed to recover the twenty odd q1uid.
It seems that some companies do not like you switching, and will deliberately make life difficult for you, even if it means them breaking the law.
String 'em up, that's what I say.

Gotta be careful with Direct Debits and inform them in writing not via the phone, also inform your bank as well that they are cancelled.
