Petrol Station Rip Off

When I went to fill up on Saturday morning, the trip computer said I had about 30miles left, I have a 60 litre tank with a 3 litre reserve ... yet I easily managed to put 64 litres in!!! (I only usually put in just over 60 litres)

I complained to the attendant, who said that no one else had complained and that they are monitored by trading standards blah blah blah ... she said she'd get the manager to call me on Monday morning (I really don't expect the hear anything ...)

I'm tempted to ring up trading standards myself and make a formal complaint ...

Do ring up mate, do ring up!

PS: Any chance the trip computer wasn't exactly right?

My trip computer isn't right ... but unless I had negative miles left there is no way that 64 can fit into 63 ...

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

I don't think the manufacturers count the filler neck - that would add at least a litre.

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

But that would imply that my tank was completely empty, which I'm pretty sure it wasn't (the fuel gauge was not at the lowest I've seen it) ...

Worth a call to trading standards, the garage won't do anything !!

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

This happened to me on Saturday. Went to the petrol station with half a tank and put in 44litres!!!! I was bending over checking for holes in the tank. Expected to see a stream of petrol oozing down the forecourt. Now i know why the gauge goes down so fast from half. It's because its ****ing empty.

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

I filled up a 5 litre petrol can with 5.63 litres once the garage said the can must be bigger than it states. Muppets

Filler pipe and expansion allowances. If you fill a petrol can/tank right to the brim then put the top on you're in for one hell of shock later on.

(I virtually always fill up at about the 30 miles to go mark and normally only squeeze in just over 60 litres)

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

Chris (156) My gut feeling is that the petrol station measurements are unlikely to be wrong, I think that they are stringently checked regularly by the local Weights and Measures people, it would be a foolish filling station that tried a deliberate rip off, wouldn't last long.

We all know the accuracy of our Alfa fuel gauges and who knows that the figure quoted for tank capacity is that accurate either ? Of course the ambient temperatures at the time of fill up have an effect also. A lot of people in hot climates never fill to the brim as they know that when the temperatures rise the fuel will expand.

Just my thoughts, I'm not saying that they are correct !

You fill your petrol tank with 50 L of petrol [full] in the morning when the temperature is 20oC. The car is left in the Sun and the temperature, in the car, rises to 55oC.
a. We can use  = (V)/(VT).
We know T = 55oC – 20oC = 35 oC, and  = 0.95x10-3 C-1. Rearranging for V gives:
V =  V T = = 0.95  10-3 C-1  50 l  35oC = 1.7 l
Special chars are not accepted but you get the idea, increasing temp by 35 degrees c on 50L will produce an increase of 1.7 Litres

Therefore a 1 degree increase in temp with produce an increase in volume of .0057 litres in a 60 litre tank. To increase the volume by 4 litres you would have to have an increase in temp of 701 centigrade (if my maths serves correct)
How near the sun was the car ??

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

I accept that the accuracy is not that good, however I would expect consistency, when I normally fill up (at other petrol stations) I can usually only just fit in just over 60 litres ... I accept that diesel will change in volume over time, but is the diesel in the tanks that much hotter than the ambient temperature? also would you expect the diesel to contract at such a high rate that it would make a significant difference to it's volume over a matter of seconds?

I wouldn't expect the average garage owner to have the expertise to tweak the settings on the pump, but ... the service station wench said that they were last checked a few months ago ...

Re: Petrol Station Rip Off

They are still charging 116.9p per litre around here for unleaded.
In swindon at the supermarket it is 110.9p a litre.

Thieving Bastewards.

The RAC reckon petrol should be 10p a litre cheaper now the oil price has dropped.
