Lorry tyre blow out

I was lucky today, while on the M25 just coming out of the Dartford tunnel I was overtaking a lorry and while alongside it one of the tyre blew out

They are obviously pretty high pressure and the noise was like a bomb going off. At first I thought it was my car in some way but soon realised what had happened. Luckily no debris hit my car, or me as I had the windows open.

Wow you were really lucky - I have seen a blown lorry tyre take out a windscreen - so they can be pretty lethal....

Re: Lorry tyre blow out

I was in heavy traffic a few months ago, when a tyre blew on a box van about 50 metres in front of me. He was all over the place but managed to get it on the hard shoulder (respect due). I braked hard and put the hazards on, but got beeped a couple of times by people speeding past me - have they no imagination?

Rig? thats a 10 4 rubber duck! in no way shape or form can any truck in this country be called a rig

never mind tyres going bang, you should see a split rim truck wheel let go, i hate the things, you have to put them in a cage to inflate them and if they let go they destroy the cage, ive seen pictures of guys ripped to shreads by them, not a pretty sight. my only experiance of them was in the army, we used to park a vehicle on the wheel if we had to inflate one whilst on exercise then inflate them at arms length, horrible bloody things.

Re: Lorry tyre blow out

My dad had a blow-out on a lorry on the M25 some years ago, another car stopped to check it wasn't there car ! My old man turned round to them and said 'I think you'd know if you were driving on three wheels !!

I had a blow out on a trailer, it is like a bomb going off !!

As reliable as my car has been, being an alfa my first thoughts despite not ragging it at the time where "Oh **** the engines gawn pop"

Re: Lorry tyre blow out

...Watched a documentary on split rims on US telly some years back...they set up a test where they positioned a mannequin next to a spilt rim mounted to an RV, and let the rim go, as it would on a failure. Completely ripped the mannequin in two..that image has stuck with me ever since; and as a result, I always have that extra bit of anxiety when I am stuck in traffic along side a coach or lorry, with his lug nuts at my eye level !!

Re: Lorry tyre blow out

So much of this sort of thing is down to poor maintainence. It's got worse recently with the number of shabby East European wagons operating over here. Drivers falling asleep is a massive problem too. I've had to wake up a couple who were wandering over the carriageway.

On a different tack tho, whats the deal with overtaking wagons at 55 mph ? I'm sick of it. It holds everbody up and it's dangerous.

IMO Wagons should only be allowed in the inside lane and can only overtake if the road is 4 lanes or more...any takers?
