Moaning Muck Spreading

Why do the Farmers have to spread muck on the fields when it is hot and you want to have the windows open?

The smell is enough to make me wretch.

Can they not spread the muck when the weather is a bit cooler and they have their windows closed, instead of doing it when the weather is really hot.

Re: Muck Spreading

Its not really a countryside smell though.

Nearby we have a sewage farm, the sewage is treated and scattered on the fields and that is what the smell is from.

Good old animal muck doesn't smell too bad but this smells like a cross between Brussel sprouts and a dirty dustbin.

Re: Muck Spreading

I've lived with the smells for such a long time that it doesn't bother me...although I obviously don't enjoy the smell.

Re: Muck Spreading

Agree with SymonH again.: Aquamonia tankers, spraying re-constituted, in liquid form, human crap, then we eat the produce, and carry on with gut upsets, and lot's of stinky farts! Good Innit? IDT.:

Re: Muck Spreading

I think they grow wheat and rape on the land that they spray the crap on.
It looked like it was sort of a powder, as there was a dust cloud behind the truck that was depositing it. I have a feeling all the water is removed, cleaned then put in the river.

I agree you ZF and Nev, they shouldn't be putting stuff like that on land used for arable farming.
The last bright idea of feeding cows to cows caused massive problems with BSE.

This is very prevalent in Germany and as such we have possibly imported another wonderful EU idea.........

Re: Muck Spreading

i grew up next to farm so i like country smells, but i think farmers do get a perverse kick from muckspreading in hot weather anoys all the townies who move to the sticks, that'll teach them to complain about fox hunting, cockerels crowing, and other countryside noises and smells.

Re: Muck Spreading

Can't beat the smell of old fashioned horse sh***% as came out of the discharge ends of the dray horses, when I was a kid. Or the old cow flops, that still prevailed around Luton airport, when it was still a private flying club, and Oh! those superb wild mushrooms that grew up there then. Food production for the masses nowadays is pure crap!! Of the wrong sort.

Re: Muck Spreading

'Fraid the variety we picked on the then Luton aiport fields were of the common edible variety, tasty with bacon and eggs, but not magic, really.: Need some magic ones washed down with a draught of cow parsely juice, in this crazy world, to relax?

Re: Muck Spreading

I think the main factor that governs when the farmer spreads the slurry (it even sounds vile) is that the wind is blowing downwind of the farmhouse - he ain't stupid!
