£130 for a keyboard that tells you when to rub it down ... why not just do it at the same time as the desk is cleaned??

Re: Your tax $ at work....

This sort of thing is always the case when you appoint a sole supplier, back when I worked for the UK's biggest defence contractor (no prizes for guessing), they subcontracted the IT to a separate company ... we needed a few more machines added to the network, the trouble is there weren't any spare network sockets so we suggested (as the network traffic required was quite light) that they buy a 20 netgear 8 port switch, easy ...

... but no, they didn't support them, the only ones they support were 230 Cisco fully managed switches, the reasons given was "security" ... so they install this 230 switch ... and guess what leave all the security settings on default, therefore the same as a bog standard netgear one ...

Oh well ...

sorry you're right!!! and that's why the bean counters justified the cost of these "self cleaning" keyboards ...

... anyway from my extensive research (watching Holby City) the only use for computers in the NHS is to look at facebook and send amusing emails that can be misinterprated and provide a story line over a few episodes ...

Tory trash talk fails to halt bin bugging plans | The Register

BBC NEWS | England | Norfolk | Microchip bins project rubbished

Another £1 Million for a pilot "pay-as-you-throw" scheme
that's been binned without ever working at all.

(uk.gov still going ahead with legislation for this down
everyone's throats!. )

The NHS germ free keyboards isn't a bad idea. The NHS has a massive hygene issue but I'm sure they could have done better than £130 a keyboard.

Why not just throw a 5 keyboard away every 3 months ... the 130 keyboards would only become cost effective after 6 1/2 Years!!!, by which time I'm sure they would need to be replaced anyway!!!

Careful, now. This is the public sector we're on about and it would be best to keep any sensible analysis out of it. What better way to show that you're serious about something than buy a wildly expensive keyboard?

Yes you can just imagine the headlines "NHS wastes millions by throwing out 'puter keyboards" ... and we'd be sitting here saying "why don't they just clean them"

Re: Your tax $ at work....

I have to say working in IT when I go and work at peoples desks the condition of keyboards and mice is often such that I feel like wretching when I have to touch them.

Some people are just dirty, if they made the dirty people wash ore then they wouldn't need the keyboards to be washed so often.

Re: Your tax $ at work....

There's no denying keyboards get minging.
But as usual with any IT, uk.gov thinks that
expensive technology will solve their problem,
when in fact common sense and strict cleaning
regimes would do just as well if not better.
And would probably save money in the long run.

To be fair the NHS does need to advertise it's services ... although I would have thought the money would be better spent in "real world" advertising ... after all who clicks on the sponsered links? I never have ...

Maybe I'll run for election and try and inject some common sense into the system...

People joke about public service spending but at times it is insane. About 6 years ago, the team I was working in decided to get an answerphone to help manage the volume of calls we were getting. I offered to nip to Argos and buy one for about 15 and claim the money back. I was told I couldn't and that we had to get one from our IT and telephony supplier. They delivered a basic BT machine (15 in Argos) and charged us 5 quid a month for it. 6 years on, that team still has the same 15 quid machine and is still paying 5 quid a month. It has now cost nearly 600.
