Nuclear powered watches ?????

Withiut realising exactly how it is powered, I recently bought one of those watches that have to be worn constantly in order to keep the sodding thing working. Since I have several watches I don;t always want to wear the same one, so it stops working not long after I take it off. I have been told that one can buy a gizmo into which one puts the watch and that keeps it working by moving the watch, but that seems like a pain. I tried attaching it to the dog's collar recently because the bugger never stops running, even when he's asleep ! (almost), but like all dogs he enjoys a good roll in the **** and he came back yesterday with the watch covered in horse (or something) **** ! Any ideas anyone ?

Re: Nuclear powered watches ?????

I thought with those "sort of watches" you just needed to wind it up well once a day (nudge nudge wink wink ...)

Sorry to lower the tone (but not that sorry )

Therefore using another source of energy, and removing the "eco", from eco-drive.

Those types of watches have a manual winder so you don't have to wear them all the time. If i don't use my watch for a few days I always give it a top up.

I'm sure there must be reassuringly expensive solar powered watches available Sir L-B? You could always leave it on the windowsill while you're not wearing it?

Re: Nuclear powered watches ?????

I thought kinetic watches kept going for ages?

Anyway, surely leaving it ontop of the washing machine and/or tumble dryer would be enough to keep it wound?

I'd try that but my wife is always sitting on top of one and the Japanese au pair sitting on the other. I've no idea what they are talking about when they are there, they just generally sit there with big smiles on their faces !

Re: Nuclear powered watches ?????

Seiko kinetics have a tiny electric motor that charges the internal battery. The hands stop moving after a few hours but the movement keeps running for up to 4 years. As soon as you move it around it goes to the correct time.

Getting one of the women to wear that self winder of yours might be the answer for you Steve...... can they be overwound?

Not all the Seiko kinetics do that, I know mine doesn't.

I have one of these. Has an analogue dial that is a solar panel, and is only a 4-5 mm thick. Cost me 200 a few years back - and works a treat.

Re: Nuclear powered watches ?????

kinetic watches sound like: 'hey! here's a car that never runs out of petrol! Assuming you're prepared to drive it 24/7, for the rest of you life without stopping!"

I'll stick to my two Mondaines. Thick as mince by contrast, but utterly undemanding. And not stopped - or wound up - once.

Re: Nuclear powered watches ?????

Put it in a plastic sarnie bag and tie to a windy washing line

Van is always complaining about his f'ing watches. I haven't had a watch for years but allowed* him to buy me a watch at duty free (it matches a Dior collar I have)

*read as, told him "I want that!"
