£33m child benefit paid to foreign children who live abroad:

£33m child benefit paid to foreign chldren who live abroad | Mail Online

Mr Hammond said: "At a time when child poverty is rising, child-benefit money is being siphoned off to children who donít even live here.

"The Government has no way of checking if these claims are genuine.

"This is yet another example of how Gordon Brown has lost control of Government spending."

Opposition MPs yesterday demanded the Government "get a grip" on the runaway payouts.

And we ask ourselves why our taxes are so high

Re: Our Useless Government Strikes Again

Nothing suprises me any more. The level of incompetance in the government is staggering.

The fact that the government has expanded the civil service massively since taking over in power has also made it more difficult to control.

Not so Nev. All migrant workers with kids back home can and do claim family allowance. Don't blame them, it's there so they should claim what is allowed. I think it's madness but there you are.

When I emigrated to Cyprus in 93 had to stop claiming this allowance, it seems that times have changed.

It may be the case, but the Daily Fail "journalists"
pull the figures from their arses, so that people
think "bloody foreigners bla bla blah..."

Re: Our Useless Government Strikes Again

The trouble with all this sort of stuff is that it is actually believable ... doesn't matter how accurate it is, but if you throw enough mud some sticks, don't get me wrong I'm NOT defending Gordon, can't stand the man, mainly because this is exactly what he does to ... put's out "half truths" just to try and manipulate the public (some would call it propergander) ... carbon dioxide ... say no more (HST it's been a while.... )

Don't they all, including the " broadcast " journalists.

Think I'll switch to the Daily Sport for a more balanced view !

the Express does Diana along with worst/hottest/coldest summer on record.

the Mail gets most of its stories from The Sun a day later. Lazy journalism.

Re: Our Useless Government Strikes Again

The Mail pick stories purely based upon the fact that they will get up the nose of the conservative right, and word them as negatively as possible to appeal to the mindset of those of that demographic.

I'm convinced that if the Mail went out of print tomorrow, then within a year we'd have half as many people suffering from heart attacks and high blood pressure as we currently do

I occasionally read it.

Though I never buy it. A guy at work brings it in, and leaves it in the work canteen when he has finished. Its hardly the most cheerful paper..

They did a few good articles on the road tax hike (Poll tax on wheels) next year though which cannot be bad.

Re: Our Useless Government Strikes Again

Well, our taxes are going somewhere and they are always going up.

Nothing to do with the Daily Mail - I heard on the radio that today (Monday 2nd June) is officially "tax freedom day", the notional day when the average Brit stops paying tax on their annualised average income.

It is (again) later than last year, and it is now a week later in the year than when Gordon (I'm a Very Prudent Chancellor - Trust Me) Clown first got his sweaty mitts on the public coffers.

I know for a fact I am a lot worse off and I don't need either the Daily Mail confirm it or any New Labour apologists to tell me otherwise!

So how does that work if migrant workers can claim it?

Note the italics before I get flamed for any incorrectly perceived insult to immigrant workers.

Thats terrible.
I have to pay money to the UK CSA for my Daughter, however I am not allowed to see her, and I don't even know where in the UK they are living.

Another reason for me to emigrate. I have no problem supporting my child, but when I cannot see her, and the fact that her mother is probably living with a man that earns more than me really makes me angry.

Re: Our Useless Government Strikes Again

Hang on,

1) A British national trying to claim child benefit
in a foreign country. Sounds like sponging. (No offence. )

2) How the hell can a foreign government agency have
any jurisdiction in the UK.

Tell them to go whistle. (After taking proper legal advice. )

Nev i was trying to prove a point albeit it to myself (i am a british national living in Britain)

Namely "I can be hounded for money from OZ for my son, yet i cannot get the rightful assistance from my own government whereas a pole, Czech etc...can)

P.S. not trying to get out of supporting my kid have just spent £2000 visiting him, paid for dental treatment and renewed his wardrobe, he wants for nothing!!!!

I know that!

I meant you are a British citizen, resident here and your son is British with his British mum who are both living abroad, so why can't it be sent to her there?
