I plead guilty to using post quote.

However in mitigation I would say that sometimes a thread will get more than one strand as comments diverge from the original post. In those circumstances it is necessary to quote the reply(s) one is responding to.

In general I'd prefer to seeing the quote function being used, especially for the reason mentioned above.

I use when replying to a post further up the thread or when I want to comment on part of a very long thread. I'm not sure that everybody knows that it's possible to edit a quote to remove the irrelevant parts, or to use the "quote" tag to split a quote.

Tests have indeed shown that further training is required for some regarding the quote function :HEADBANG:

We've already had this exact same discussion. I think you might even have started it that time too.

And yet it continues.

I will have to monitor the situation and repeat until the scourge of unnecessary post quoting is stopped.

The notifications are a PITA.

I wonder if they can be turned off?

It's annoying to reply to a post (without quote) to find that some other basket has squeezed an in-between post which renders your nuanced and erudite post senseless.

I can barely imagine how many times that must have happened to you.

It's he extra time researching references that really allows those neanderthal sort-answer guys to wreck the flow of the thread.

I was going to say that the complaint is more reasonable now we have the issue of each quote annoying you with a notification. Except David has shared the fix for that problem. So I'm still of the opinion that this just isn't any kind of an issue. Who cares if there's a quote box in the post? If you already know what it says, then don't read it.

So essentially, what you are saying is: He repeats his posts! Why?
