Sun life over 50 plan.

My 86 year old Mother in Law passed away following a 12 month battle with cancer.
Her advance planning was sound, She took out a Sun Life over 50 Plan some years ago to cover her funeral.

I bet when Parkies family have to claim against his, he won't get the hassle we have.

At the age of 70 when she took the policy out, she was not aware she may pay more than what is paid in premiums.

There is no doubt a place for Policies like this, but the advertising is wrong, Well off Celebrities or very healthy looking pensioners talking about the Sun Life Plan as if it was only a news paper you were buying.

Four Weeks following the Funeral and still waiting for the Cheque.

It's a shame how they target a generation that are proud, and want to do the right thing.

Those adverts drive me up the wall, the carrot of a free gift is sickening. The rules are simple, keep paying your premiums until you die, stop or miss one payment, then your cover ends and no monies are due.

With a policy like that there is only one winner and it isn't the punter. It is basically a gamble on your life expectancy. Every year, in the month before my birthday, I get multiple letters encouraging me to take out a Sun Life policy. Since I have some savings, sufficient to pay for a funeral, I just ignore them.

The OPs MiL would have been better off buying a funeral plan if that was what she wanted the Life Policy to cover. They aren't ideal but at least the funeral is sorted to the wishes of the person concerned.

Procrastination is the thief of time

All went well despite the sun Life issues.
They prey on the old and vulnerable.

My own mother died in 2015 aged 94.

A few years prior (aged 87) she bought a funeral plan (Co-Op) for £2500.

On the day after her death I registered it and went straight to the nearest Co-Op funeral branch.

They were wonderful - took over all of the arrangements - embalmment and viewing for those who needed such.

They talked it all through with me and actually understood my wishes and views.

On the day of the funeral it all went without a hitch.

I guess what I am saying is that paying for a plan means you get the funeral you want at the price you paid then despite the fact it would have cost more a few years later - in my mother's case about £1k more.
