The hell that is file names for document version control

We've all seen this. And screamed.

whitepaper draft v1

whitepaper draft v2.1

whitepaper draft v1_TG amends (v1)

whitepaper draft v1.1 PB changes (draft)

whitepaper draft V1_TG (v1) PY & LJ changes NOT final draft

whitepaper draft V1_TG (v2 amends) TG_LJ changes not final draft Pete Smith amends close to final draft

whitepaper draft V4_TG (v2) TG_LJ changes not final draft Pete Smith amends close to final draft DRAFT (v2)

whitepaper draft V1/V3_TG (v1) TG_LJ changes not final draft Pete Smith & AA (added new amends) close to final draft DRAFT (v1)

whitepaper draft v1_TG (v2) FINAL DRAFT_NOT FINAL with PB final amends draft

ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!

Why do this? Why do this to anyone? Why not just:

Draft 1
Draft 2
Draft 3

It's a mission to murder me mentally.

A driver is always faithful to a car that's always faithful to its driver.

Sometimes in the darkest hour, love comes shining through.
Then it doesn't seem so far from me to you.

Here's how we do it.

Minor versions
Version 00v01
Version 00v02
Version 00v03
etc.

Major versions with revisions
Version 01V00
Version 01V01
Version 01V02
Version 01V03

Version 02V00
Version 02V01
Version 02V02

Of course nobody pays attention to those sorts of details and you get the situation that you find yourself in, Scud.
Etc.

I used to do lots of this in my previous job and it was always a nightmare. It doesn't help that some people just don't get it.

I share your aaaargh. Version 0.1 etc up to 0.9 are drafts, version 1.0 to 1.9 are all final versions but not signed off, version 2.0 is the signed off final version, and versions 2.1 to infinity are the revised final signed off draft versions.

Why not just use the date?

We had some people who would call the new document "latest". Two years and umpteen revisions later and there would be a very out of date document still labelled "latest"

I had a feeling I wouldn't be alone on this, chaps

To add to the mayhem, mid way through revisions, some well meaning bod will say 'hey, I've now created your doc as a Google doc!' Why? Why in the name of God did you done that? If *I* created the doc, why have *you* gone and created it as a Google doc, and then continued the baffling file name convention? Did I ask you to do this? Do I pop into your garden when you're not there and swap around your plants and garden furniture? No. No I don't. So why save my doc as a Google doc when I didn't ask you to? So I save it back to a Word one. Draft V6 Version control will be the end of me. Where there is potential for complexity, focus on simplicity

I've never heard of it.

The company that I work for actually makes software that automates amd controls things like versions / revisions, workflow, approvals, redlining etc. Mostly in association with 2D/3D drawings.

^^^ I used to do some work for a company that produced a Version Control product for software developers. It was very popular, especially with games developers working from all over the world collaborating and submitting/correcting their code at different times from different time zones. All I remember is branch, trunk and root. And I don't even remember what they were

Maybe it'd be clearer if Phil explained it?

Sorry. That one was a bit tenuous. I'm just trying to be poplar.

Until you've sampled the joys of Clearcase "config specs" you've not lived.

I was just trying to weed out the people who aren't really committed to these pun battles.

Oak-k, didn't realise Yew were getting serious. Although it did fall short, IMHO.

Followed by, "Can put the paragraph about choice from page 6 of V2.0 drafts back in, please?"

There was a woman on the plane yesterday who spent hours writing and re-writing a document on Microsoft's response to the EU's GDPR etc.

(I couldn't sleep as her screen brightness was maxed out so I just read her document to pass some time. Very interesting.)
