I may have mentioned Northern Rail before as they are possibly the most slipshod, unreliable, uninterested, badly-organised, routinely disappointing, dishonest, shower of **** it has ever been misfortune to have dealings with.
I commute by rail when Iím working in Manchester. In theory this should be ideal, my local station is less than 10 minutesí walk, and the walk at the other end is five minutes. Total journey time should be 30 minutes; way quicker than the car and cheaper too when you factor in parking. The bus is even cheaper but takes at least an hour each way. Unfortunately Northern Rail is my rail service provider which means I have to endure knackered old Pacer trains which are always late, often overcrowded to the point where it is dangerous, and a very infrequent service. Journey time in reality is nearer 45 minutes (to do 9 miles). If a train is cancelled, generally itís an hour until the next one.
Northern Rail have struck upon a fantastic idea to solve all of those issues. Itís a stroke of simple genius. ďWhat is it?Ē I hear you ask. Well, Iíll tell you. Instead of running four trains in rush hour(s) at 7:02am, 7:49am, 8:06am and 8:49am they are going to run three. A 6:30am train which gets into Manchester before most peopleís offices open, a 7:30am and an 8:30am.
ďBut Keith, how can that possibly solve the issue. Have you gone mad you soppy old get?Ē I hear you wondering aloud. Quite simple Ė knackers to Northern Rail, the environment, the time, and the money. Iím going back to driving in. I will have my own space, my transport will be there at the right time, I don't have to have the heater on in July, and I get some flexibility.
Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).
