Why do people bother getting a car if they don't use it?

There are three cars in particular that park down our road and never get used. One is a rusty old Ka that takes up a space because next door have had a baby and she's on maternity leave but I recently discovered who a brand new Seat SUV belongs to. The young neighbours to the other side have a newish Suzuki Swift but then after a week or two of seeing the Seat gathering dust outside our house I saw him getting into the thing and he used it once. And now, there's a poopbrown one of those Peugeot SUV things , brand new and just sitting there doing nothing. I will probably see who is responsible for this one day. If we didn't use our depreciating Giulietta and Kuga much we'd seriously considering not having them but there they are taking up parking spaces and devaluing. Must be company cars.

I think the brand new cars have to be taxed, but the Ka needs to move!

Multiple car owners without enough parking?

The reason is they are selfish [email protected]

I'd love to have had multiple cars over the years.
But not being a selfish [email protected] I never did.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rife here too. Look at my drunk neighbour and his multiple sheds.

Got a similar issue. The Council built some low-rise units for aged tenants at the bottom of my street about 25 years ago. Of course, because they were intended for aged tenants, there was little on-site parking. Since then the Councils’ priorities have changed and almost everyone in the complex now has a car and guess where they park? Presently, there’s some looney who, when their car won’t start, goes out and buys another one, leaving their previous one to rot by the curb. I’ve had the Council remove two of his cars but the third has no number plates, so the Council can’t officially inform the owner, so that car remains. Because the car is legally parked and not reported as stolen, the cops won’t do anything about it either. I’ve a couple of ideas....

Even worse when they dump them in the street, someone parks almost opposite then its an awkward chicane

Looks like they're inviting captain careless to write it off one day

Enough heat to roast a pyrenean shorthorn or two on a spit?

You spent how much on a property you have trouble parking outside of?

I don't have that much difficulty parking outside my house but my point is that I have a car because I use it. There are people with brand new cars they don't use. Why not get cabs and rent a car when you need one, for example.

I don't use my new car much ... I work from home .. which is a growing trend. But I wouldn't be without one as I can just jump in and go where I want, when I want/need.

Oh and mine is garaged!

When I had a company car and was Head Office based it was a requirement to take the car to work in case it became necessary to visit a site at short notice.

However I must admit that back then a company car was not provided as a pure perk or part of the salary but only to those that needed to travel for work.

Why do people bother getting a car if they don't use i

Because they can, they want to, it’s their choice, there’s no law against it and again, they can.

I thought that seemed a reasoned argument.

I could see the reasoning behind the rant ( I use the term loosely in this thread) if you were having difficulty parking your cars. But as that's not the case I can only assume you have a problem with a 'rusty Ka' that is bringing the tone of the area down.
Is it devaluing property prices? Has it had a negative impact on your 85k outlay?

Your welcome, I’m here to fan the fire, poke the bear, generally be the devils advocate (pita) but I do empathise with you.

I have a couple next door with four vehicles between them. When not on their drive, which they usually are, they’re a nuisance in the cul-de-sac.

Harvo, none of the above. It's more the brand new 3008 and whatever the Seat equivalent each sitting there unused . I don't wish to make it illegal or anything like that. I just can't see the point of the car sitting there unused depreciating and to a much lesser extent getting in the way. It's on a much bigger scale than its effect on me that I find it a bit odd decadent and unrepresentative of the way that things are supposed to be going with car makers becoming suppliers of "mobility".

Our road isn't a coupe de sac but there are two VW Eos, which seem susceptible to being keyed for some reason.
