Don't Be Idling Away In Oxford.

Surprised no one else picked this up, is it just me being all Victor Meldrew-ish ?

Yesterdays paper. Starting the end of this month any motorist caught stationary and with engine running for a minute or more is to be fined ! Currently only in Oxford but with expansion plans, and why not, a good little earner.

So if you are waiting a few minutes for someone with engine running for the A/C - done. If it's a cold night you are expected to freeze to death !

Of course the reason given is to save the environment...... here we go again. I'm no expert but would guess that stopping and starting an engine continually will probably be worse than letting an up to temp engine idle away. The battery will have a shorter life too, not to worry, the old ones will be just be dumped, perfectly ecological.

Big Brother is getting bigger, I'm really sick of being told what to do, being spied upon and my intelligence being insulted, all so a few people can feel smug and that local authorities can mug me again.

Anyone agree ?

I wouldn't take it to heart Nige, they are hardly testing your inteligence, it's just Operation Jerky Knee being kicked into action, it's always been against the highway code to have an engine idling for too long a period, but the green police how now found there was another bee up thier collective asses and as they and thier 2 Jags leader don't know how an engine works, then common sense will not prevail.....AGAIN!

Too true, unfortunately. Wonder what would happen if you were being watched and run for 59 seconds, stop for 5, start and stop ad nauseum ! Might be fun !

Run it for 59 seconds, switch off, re-start.
Just to prove the stupidity of the rule.

Who thinks up these things.

Perhaps I'll start a political party called "The Common Sense Alliance." That'll teach them

Crazy. How about just easing the clutch with it in first then reverse and letting it roll back and forth every 55 seconds?

Most of the pollution in oxford is Diesel fumes from buses and Taxi's.
Maybe they should get tickets if they leave their engines running.

Or better still do a reverse of the system they have now. Ban all of the buses from the city center, and allow the cars in. Most of the buses are normally empty anyway.

Actually, the new 4 Cylinder BMWs with the Efficient Dynamics Package turn the engine off automatically when the car comes to a standstill and you take it out of gear, when you depress the clutch the engine starts again.

This feature also happens to imbue it with class leading economy and emissions (sic).

Re: Don't Be Idling Away In Oxford.

This is another case of local councillors trying to make themselves look good in the eyes of the government/green activists/electorate or anyone else they try to garner favour with.
One of our local muppet council committees told us they were going to bring in more stringent emission rules for taxis to show they were doing their bit for the environment. This would affect aroound 200 vehicles in a local borough that has the M6 running through it. Another well thought out plan by the butchers, bakers and builders who form our local councils.

Buses in the 21st century should be running
on either hydrogen, natural gas, (Nuclear/hydro generated) electricity
or at a push Aquazole (Diesel/water mix).

By 2050 they may well be. Its difficult enough to make any new bus profitable when bought new, even then passengers complain about fare prices to travel on it.. A new full size service bus can cost around £100000 and up without any fancy fuel system added on.

I thought DERVs can run on Aquazole with any mods?

Is anywhere in the UK introducing it?

(Probably not, due to the privatized industry
really not giving a ****? )

Re: Don't Be Idling Away In Oxford.

I think its just a theory on how you can convert water into hydrogen and oxygen, then burn it together to make lots of energy and slightly less water than you started with.

What it won't tell you is that it will need lots of electricity to seperate the water in the first place.

There is lots of therory on this on the internet for free.

And I don't know why there is a 6R4 look alike metro on the advert either..

Re: Don't Be Idling Away In Oxford.

Some of these ideas that they have are worthwhile ,its the fact that they pass laws that are difficult and costly to enforce so they load them with ridiculous penalties.

Not leaving engines idling does save money, thats why economy focused cars as mentioned earlier switch off at junctions.Try leaving your engine running in Switzerland and someone tells you straight away, don't know if there's a law there but they sure don't like it.For needless engine running coach drivers are the worst culprits I reckon.

Sounding of horns is more often an act of rudeness or temper than a warning to prevent an accident, the horn is sounded long after the incident is over. As for taxi drivers sounding their horn to tell you they are outside, that's just plain ignorant. So, yeah fine the noisey gets $300,a good idea.
