Re: Oh Good!!! the Boat Race

Stay on here. Much more fun than watching the flannelled fools and muddied oafs busting a gut for something or other that few others care about. Still. if they were to sink and the rescue boat broke down..........

Funny you saying that GJ, both of mum's brothers were Oxford chaps, and one subsequently taught at the 'Tiffin' school in Surrey.: Think this may be repeat info?

Its a pity they don't put the boat race on in the evenings, that way if I was having trouble getting to sleep I could put it on.

Re: Oh Good!!! the Boat Race

What's with all the vitriol against the boat race!? I find it a wonderful sporting event.

A true part of british culture, something which show a genuine sporting rivalry being portrayed in good spirits and has produced some fascinating races in recent years.

And as an Oxford follower i'm delighted!!

Re: Oh Good!!! the Boat Race

I like that, aristocracy.: Gran and Grandad scrimped to get both lads into Oxford on a scholarship, and the three girls had to be almost subservient to them, knocking on their room doors when they were studying at home, before being allowed in.:

Mother always felt a bit aggrieve about this.: Not a bad achievement for a cobblers offspring though I guess. You obviously know of the Tiffin school then, I take it?:

You mean Australian/New Zealand culture (given where the rowers are from)

Re: Oh Good!!! the Boat Race

If nothing else, the great contest gave rise to this statement from the race commentator :

Harry Carpenter after the Oxford-Cambridge boat race 1977 - 'Ah, isn't that nice- the wife of the Cambridge President is kissing the Cox of the Oxford crew.'

Me too. Despite ITV's lamentable soap opera coverage.

Some of us on here actually used to participate in the ancient and noble sport of rowing, (before I got too heavy) so kindly lay off.

For the record, the crowds are usually around the 200,000 mark (260,000-odd last time I went).
Not many sports events get that many spectators.

And no, I'm not a toff
