you know?

I have noticed something in recent months which is now beginning to wind me right up.

It's the use of 'you know' as a linguistic filler.

I have for a long time had a strong dislike of the the use of 'like' but 'you know' has creeped up on me.

Probably the worst (that I notice) is in BBC news interviews on the breakfast news thing. Both interviewers and interviewees are guilty.

No! No, I don't -well know. Wouldn't be watching the interview if I did!

Not got any specific examples to show you and not going to look for them as I will only get angrier.

Feel free to add examples you have seen below.

Footballers are a source of many examples of this, drives me mad too. David beckham used to do it all the time in interviews.

Have noticed a new irritating habit recently, where people say 'listen' before making a point. Well I am already listening that's the basic idea of you being on tv, and if I'm not interested in your view then I won't start listening just because you told me to!

(Radio interviewees who do it stick out like sore thumbs.)

Listen to TV and most other conversations recently and notice how many start their sentences, even forum discussions with 'So'. It will soon have you ranting at the screen and others........................

"So, like yeah, I was walking down the road, know what I mean?"

Well actually no. Hmm, walking down the road? - such an alien concept.
