Beetle Madness

There's a series of roundabouts on my trip to work, all of which have two lanes and a right hand option as well as the straight ahead option. Everyone, always, uses the left hand lane for straight on. Anyway...

This morning, there's a line of traffic, at the back of which is a new style VW Beetle.

The bloke driving the VW decides that the right hand lane is the appropriate lane for straight on, and in doing so has changed lanes on the entry and then the exit, cutting across me as I stayed in the left hand lane.

No problem for me, plenty of space, and perhaps, I think, he doesn't know the road, so I'll give him some space and let him get on with his lane changing...only this guy goes mental! Starts with the hand gestures and then progresses to swerving across the road, braking erratically and (literally) bouncing up and down in the seat, so incandescent with rage at, presumably, me.

I dropped back to give him some space to cool down (I must admit I was laughing like mad at his antics which won't have helped) but he did the same at the next roundabout...cut into the right hand lane for the entry and then cut across both lanes on the exit. If anything even madder than before!

The thing I cannot get my mind around is why? Why do some people lose it like that? It was 7am on a Monday morning: the sun was shining and it was a nice day. What was the point, and what could he possibly think I would do other than laugh?

(He actually indicated every time he swerved across the lanes!)

The second thing I cannot understand is this...if you're going to get road rage, why do it in such an effeminate car? I mean, it's got a vase on the dashboard for a flower! How scary can that be?

Rant over. Thanks for listening.

Re: Beetle Madness

Maybe he was just listening to a heavy metal track on the radio and dancing to it rather exuberantly?

Re: Beetle Madness

Across two lanes? In front of oncoming traffic whilst glaring at me in his rear view mirror?

Can't think even Metallica would cause that reaction?

Chris de Burgh maybe?

Re: Beetle Madness

I remember seeing two blokes going at it hammer and tongs whilst still in their cars, windows down shouting, screaming, one even brandishing a Stanley knife.

It was Mother's Day a couple of years ago and one of the blokes had a little old lady in the passenger seat...bet she was really proud her little Jimmy had grown up to be a violent arsole?

What is going wrong with people?

Its the general lack of respect and manners that is burdening this country at present. Look at the kids these days.... now look at the parents.

yep - I'm afraid the one thing the little swines can do is screw

they can't read, work or contribute in any meaningful way, but they can drink and procreate

then they drive

Well, I'm close to having had enough...things seem to have gone very bad, very quickly in the past couple of years.

Re: Beetle Madness

Not on the roads, but on the subject of over-reaction I had an interesting one on the football field the other week.

This guy booted me in the ankle, so I slightly sarcastically said "Do you fancy going for the ball next time mate?"
To which he reacted by screaming "What did you f***ing say, you f***ing pr***?" and continued in that vein for a minute or so.
I just laughed and said "Wow, you're a friendly guy, aren't you?"
Didn't know how to react to be honest. I've never seen anyone go quite so far off the deep end for so little reason.

Re: Beetle Madness

Was it a league game or a kickabout?

slightly embarassed shuffle here

I used to get a bit hot headed on the footy park - more about having a go at my team mates (popular lad)
hairdryer effect more than a few times

Re: Beetle Madness

I played a lot of rugby and any sort of "foul or abusive" got you sent off pretty quickly regardless who it was directed at.

I once broke my big toe in a game and swore like a trooper: got sent off which rather added insult to the injury!

Re: Beetle Madness

Great leveller playing in the pack...no where to hide and very obvious if you could or couldn't do the job.

Too old and broken to play anymore...and soft and fat and unfit!

Re: Beetle Madness

This is just a friendly game we have once a week on Astroturf. Man's a total nutter.
I've had the odd rant myself in the past, but it takes more than someone being gently sarcastic to set me off!

Re: Beetle Madness

same here

I was a pretty poor tight head prop, no club affiliation - just played with a bunch of lads who were decent players, sorted out a works team and played a few challenge matches every year (against army, local sides - often hopelessly mismatched) - great fun!

We have the friendly on w eekly basis and have a few so called mates turn up and lose it - they are politly told where to go and dont bother coming back.

It is a kickabout for an hour not champions leauge final.

Re: Beetle Madness

That's exactly what we should do to be honest - except we were short on numbers and accepted pretty much anyone, and now there's a few of the nutters. Makes it a bit harder.
It's either indicative of what they're like or what I'm like (or both) that I now refer to the opposite team as 'ASBO United'.

Re: Beetle Madness

i used to be a linesman for the local league, my old man was playing in the game.....

It was a close fought game, two rival teams, lots of pride to play for, the old man is coming down the wing, he was off-side and i called it

he went absolutly mental on me, really lost the plot, but not bad enough to get sent off.

can't remember the score, but i was driving that day.......and he was walking home

he didn't speak to me for a few days
