Apostrophe's

What is it with people that they don't know the difference between the plural and when something belongs to somebody?

Garage
My local garage has started doing MOT's and tyre's - well, that's what it says on their new sign.

And don't get me started on the paninni's at the café in town: a double-plural, a misplaced apostrophe and a spelling mistake all brilliantly combined into a single act of illiteracy...

Is that worse than 'could of', instead of 'could have'? That one leaves me

Now they say under that picture of Charles Dicken's:

"Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council's grammatical error appeared on an advert for a performance of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations in July"

but surely the correct (though rarely used) form is Charles Dickens's. It would only be Dickens' if "Dickens" were the plural of "Dicken" and all the many Dickens had Great Expectations.

That one is almost understandable, as how would you say could've ?

One that gets me is, I'll try and do .. rather than I'll try to do ..

but I failed English language, so what do I know ?

The difference is that "try and" is a long established colloquial form, acknowledged in the dictionaries, whereas "could of" is just wrong.

Possessives : The Apostrophe

Quote:
a name ending in s takes only an apostrophe if the possessive form is not pronounced with an extra s. Hence:

Socrates' philosophy
Saint Saens' music
Ulysses' companions
Aristophanes' plays
