Additions to your plate of food....

.....by the cook.

Gammon egg and chips, yum, arrived with black pepper on the eggs. Why?

Cod and chips, at the same pub, arrived with rock salt sprinkled over the meal, again, why?

Another pub, hoisin sauce poured over my spring rolls, I do like hoisin but it's usually served in a small bowl so you can dip.

Baked beans poured over my hash brown, I didn't know it was there, it was a bit soggy when I found it.

Additions, that you weren't aware of that turn up halfway through your meal.

I went to a Eurocamp site in France in '97 when I'd not long been seeing Mrs H. She, trying to impress me, got up early one morning to cook me breakfast which was greatly appreciated. I was half way through my fried egg when I noticed something brown and small incased in the white and on closer inspection turned out to be mouse ****. We later saw the offending beast skydiving into an open packet of Jacob's Cream Crackers but I digress, after that incident I've never been too fussed about edible stuff put on my food.

I get your point though, Verbs.

Sent from my armchair using Whogivesa****

Had that more than once.

I never understood the Americans being so fussy with their food order, can I have this?, that?, on the side , without the egg yolk, without the egg white, blah blah blah.

But I get it now. My usual opening request, for which I get a roll eyes from Mrs. V, is.....does the food come on a plate?

That's a reasonable question in Yorkshire.

Generalisation coming up:

Pubs: loads of food, cheap, erratic quality, signs of cluelessness.
Restaurants: small portions, more expensive, quality more reliable, daft additions unusual.
Gourmet pubs: what are you doing in one of those?

(But all are susceptible to serving food on roofing tiles and timber from old pallets).

I do that too.

There is a campaign that you could join called we want plates.

John Finnimore is a supporter and wrote a wonderful song to express his frustration...

When I order a latte, I also ask whether it comes in a mug or a vase.

As well as the random, unannounced additions to your meal, I get a bit tired of having the rest of the menu read to me when ordering.

"Would you like onion rings/coleslaw/a slice of cheese/a sausage/some salad/mushrooms/a bowl of soup/a fried egg/some anchovies/mashed potato, etc with that?".

No, I would have ordered them if I'd wanted them...

Like the website.

I'm with you on the coffee as well.

Food trends are often about the sound of words rather than the taste. Went to a London café (sorry, artisan coffee shop) in which the first three items on the menu started with the following words: 1. Sourdough. 2. Granola. 3. Quinoa.

Pie and sausage nowhere to be seen dahling.

(Yes I know, dead thread resurrection).

Signs of cluelessness, yes, only the other day in the local pub my sons chicken was served barely warm, my meal wasn't much better, twice it was mentioned to the staff and what must be the standard response i guess "i will tell the chef".
Er what then, so the chef will just shrug his shoulders and say " so what"
I would have thought replacing it with the hot food we thought we had ordered would be better.
It wasn't my first choice for a pub meal, thankfully its put the rest of the family going near the place again

We’ve just been up The the North Yorkshire National Park, nice chicken and stuffing sandwich for me in the cafe, yum.

Mrs. V had a bacon sandwich served with salad and coleslaw.
