Quoting when you reply in a thread.....

.....in particular when you are the second poster.

I've just been catching up on the various lounges and I'm amazed, "nay shocked madam" at the amount of people that reply as the second, third or fourth......poster in a thread and quote the OP's post.

Just post, we know the context.

Quote my post below please. As if you wouldn't.

Last edited by Verbout; 13-07-17 at 15:38. Reason: Clarification for the second poster.

Yeah, that can be bothersome.

It does seem to be a regular occurrence.

Sometimes though, we need the context repeated.

The forum software defaults to quoting so it's easily done, even if not necessary. I don't see it's a problem.

I don't know if it was you, but a few months back a newbie got properly told off by someone for doing it. Was a bit over the top.

Quoting the actual post you're replying to avoids confusion when another poster gets in a post between you reading and replying.

It is a strange thing to get upset about.

Correct.
Somebody sometimes posts while you're posting and that makes your post appear to reply to theirs and make no sense.

@PoP

I disagree that you need to quote to direct your response towards a specific post.

At this point, it is worth a recap, so that newcomers to the discussion can understand what the problem is.

I have no problem with quotes but this ^^^ really ****es me off. It's not hard to quote someone and leave the ****ing text alone.

It's going to annoy me looking at this reply even though I've purposely fubared the quote.

Let's face it, the post is low rant, just to provoke me to reply by first quoting the OP.
Your version no longer had the provocation bit aimed at me.

I'm with you on that. As a mod, I sometimes go in and fix people's broken quotes when they make my brain itch too much.

You see, it actually happened there: bazaa appears to be replying to my posting as we simultaneously replied to a post from Harvo and mine preceded his. His makes no sense as a reply to mine which it appears to be as it follows mine.

Compare the edited Original Post with the original as quoted by the second poster. It still contains the message which he edited out, telling me to reply, quoting his post. Another interesting function of using the quote; it can't be edited by the original poster. His explanation for the edit doesn't make sense either.

I think Verbs was using the word cue in the literal sense as in a signal for action.

It's not all about you dear.

Has anyone highlighted the issue of ranted about the practice of posts quoting previous posts without using the Quote function or the Quote Icon or even quotation marks :HEADBANG:
