My good friend Giulia

What is it with missing out the word "the" which traditionally preceded the name of a car, such as the Stelvio or the Giulia? It is instead neglected to create the impression of familiarity with the now human car. It's the same with the Uk, now known as UK or Ivory Coast. The dropping of the determiner in a discussion about a new car infers some knowledgeable tone to discussion about a car by people who, in some cases , have never seen let alone bought one which would allow them to know what they're on about.

It might be rubbish to you but it's something that really irritates me. Not as much as people preferring the wrong front end on a car they weren't going to get anyway only because it's the one they couldn't have if they were going to get one.

Well, at least the names "Giulia" and "Giulietta" are actual names, so for those cars it sort-of makes sense.

You're not defensive are you Cue, I don't know why your bringing up the brera front end again, people can have a different opinion, it was only a hypothetical discussion anyway.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

I didn't realise the UK is now known
as Ivory Coast.

Stelvio Milano

Putting "the" in front of a name can imply that it's the only one. "There's the Stevio". Strictly speaking we are dropping an "a". "There's a Stelvio"

I seem to recall it was an accepted convention with Concorde. "There's Concorde" It was never "There's a Concorde"

"There's a Stevio"
When the Stelvio is not present , to point at , then it's different.
The idea of a particular model of car sponsoring a film on TV also doesn't make sense to me: the brand can sponsor a film, but one there types of car just doesn't seem to make sense.

Concorde, we all felt we had a stake in it . Different. Anthropomorphized or something.

i think Davide Cironi was confronted with this when he first went along to see Giulia in the flesh

looking for clip now ... ah here it is

the rep says it here, and it seems to flow naturally

Davide comments "he said "for Giulia" not "for la Giulia", and this for me has a lot of significance, we call her by a name"

Exactly, he has a relationship with the product. Hence he says "we call her by her name". Case remains open, for me.

or, conversely, the Netherlands or the Wirral.

The England, the France? The Windsor? The Manchester? Interesting how/why these arise

The Netherlands is a kingdom and hence plural.

you could well be right! This makes for an interesting read on the Netherlands/Netherlands:

The Netherlands, the Netherlands or Netherlands? | Jurisfluence

Not sure the Wirral has elevated to Kingdom status quite yet

I think The Wirral is just a semi-autonomous region at the moment, not a kingdom
in its own right. But after Wirrexit ....
