Workplace rant without frontiers

Like the motoring one but in the workplace. Are you on the verge of throwing someone out of a 17th floor window? Do you routinely resist the urge to spit in someone's tea? Are you seriously considering torching the place and walking away into the sunset? This is your chance to tell us all about it and get it off your chest. Or alternatively post videos of the aftermath of you reaching the end of your tether.

Over to you.

Stuff.

Everywhere.

I have for the last 18 months taken up residence in an open plan area surrounded by our Technical team who are universally, undeniably an unapologetically untidy. There are sheets and coils of board and paper accumulated in the spaces around desks. Each desk , bar my own, is barely visible under piles of disorganised detritus. They all seem obligated to eat breakfast at their desk and use wall cabinets as larders of an astonishing array of foodstuffs rather than filing. This is without doubt because the floor and desks are covered with crap that could be in cupboards.

Ironically, I have been accused of being OCD - or at least displaying OCB - as I am the odd one in 6 in this section of office, which serves to annoy me more since I am most definitely not (that much).

Our office permanently looks like a bomb has gone off. Partly due to a lack of storage space, and partly due to all the crap that people bring in. Personally I leave groceries, spare clothing and footwear other than the ones i'm wearing at home.

The reply all button in outlook.

There exists, for the purposes of passing information to everyone in our 17 storey office block, an email mailing list with everyone on it. Something trivial happens, for instance someone parks in the wrong parking space. Nobody knows whose car it is because there’s no central list maintained anywhere. The building manager issues an email to the entire building asking if anyone knows who the Nissan Quashqai (it’s always a Quashqai) reg IM55DIM parked in space 23 belongs to? At this point, sensible people realise that it’s not theirs, delete the email, and get on with their day.

30-40 stupid people will reply, to the entire building, saying it’s not theirs and they don’t know who it belongs to. In the space of five minutes you get 40 identical emails saying this. Then the do-gooders chip in and also replying to all saying “stop replying to all”. Suddenly, ten minutes have passed and you’ve got 80 emails. 20-30 of the original 40 reply to all to apologise as they hadn’t realised they were replying to all. 15 minutes in, you’ve got over 100 emails. Then the next batch of 20-30 do-gooders chime in saying “you’re still replying to all. Stop it” and you’re approaching 150 emails. This goes on for most of the afternoon until your inbox has 250 emails in it, none of which tell you anything useful. Over the next 2-3 days, a few gormless stragglers find an email in their inbox, reply to all saying the car isn’t theirs, then reply to all 5 minutes later saying sorry for replying to all, they didn’t realise the email was 2 days old.

Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).

I get that ^^^^ from a colleague oop norf.

He finds it amusing to send me links to inappropriate jokes and japes, which I usually delete, they're either misogynistic, racist or not funny.

I get his whole mailing list along with the message and the subsequent "reply to all" for several days, not as bad as it was, I think most just ignore his messages now.

Milk stealers.

Food in fridge that's been there since the Big Bang.

No staples in the machine.

No paper in the copier, paper jam someone's walked away from.

People who don't log off the computer, so you have to do it for them.

Clean your own pots and pans, the cleaners are not here for that.

I wasn't thinking of this as an opportunity to slate your employer, more an opportunity to vent about the little things that the feckless clowns you spend your day with do.

I had a freaking brilliant example of that 'reply to all' issue a few years back.

Someone managed to send an email to a large distribution list (over 200 people) but from the distribution list also (I have no idea how). And they put read receipt on.

The result of this was that every time someone on the list either read or deleted the email, it sent another email to everyone on that distribution list to tell them.

So, before we even got to the stage of the people replying to all to complain, you're already talking 200x200 = 40,000 emails sent for no reason at all. And that's when the angry people kicked in and multiplied the problem.

I was wetting myself.

I shall call this one stupidity, though it doesn't really cover it.

The office I work in is a 17 floor concrete monstrosity from the 1960s. It's a typical government building that has never had any money spent on it and is now knackered. It's is due to be put out to grass at the end of the decade but for now we're stuck with it. On daily basis, something breaks, packs up, falls off, falls down or in some way ceases to function as it should. A couple of weeks ago it was the turn of the waste pipe that carries waste water from the kitchen area on each floor to the drains. It fractured on the 4th floor and was spilling skanky water down the back stairs for a couple of hours until someone realised and asked everyone to stop using the sinks in the kitchens and use the ones in the bogs instead. But still the manky water flowed.

The following day, a plumber arrived to fix the pipe. This time the plea went out over the tannoy to not use the sinks as the plumber was removing the knackered section of pipe and splicing in a new piece. But still the manky water flowed. Whilst he was trying to do his repair, every few seconds he was being hit by cold coffee dregs, washing up water with bits of dinner in it, the oil/water drained off tins of tuna, sour milk etc. Again the plea went out FFS STOP USING THE ****ING SINKS.

And still the skanky water flowed.

Same here, especially with coffee left on and under the spoon, on the side of the sink. 5 seconds -tops - to move it under a running tap at least but no, they have to leave it and it's growing family of sibling spoons until they stick to the sink or we run out.
