Junk mail and a solution?

At my house We currently keep getting unsolicited junk mail through our letter box from our postman, even though we have a big sticker on the door saying "no junk mail or free newspapers". It is usually a few leaflets a day.

The local council may soon start charging us for the amount we throw away, so this is not on.

However I have thought of a solution, we put all of our unsolicited junk mail back into the nearest post box. I am sure if everyone did this the royal mail would soon stop delivering this crap..

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

I've done this. I open the mail and if it has a pre-paid envelope in I pop the whole lot in and send it to them on the grounds that our council can't recycle envelopes.

If it's just leaflets they go straight in the recycling box and are collected by said council every other Tuesday.

Royal Mail won't stop delivering it because they make money from delivering it.

When did the council threaten to charge you for recycling this stuff? Doesn't your council have a paper collection?

Or, why not register for the Mail Preference Service?

MPS online

We are already registered on the MPS website, most of the stuff that come through the door doesn't even have our address on it and gets delivered with letters.
The council are considering charging for non recyclable waste that it collects, but we don't have a recycling bin.

Then be sure to write "not at this address, return to sender" when you put it back in the box. The senders will cross your address off and the old address stuff will dwindle away over time. This worked for us here, and we hardly get any of that stuff now.

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

I've heard of people sellotaping the offending letter/leaflet to a house brick and returning to sender, hence sender accrues nice charge

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

And the post office accepts this, given that the average postbox slot wouldn't accommodate a housebrick?

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

The Royal Mail would go under if they didn't have the junk stuff to deliver.

We're with the MPS and the TPS to stop unsolicited post and calls - we don't get much as a result.

And I'm really careful about ticking boxes to stop anymore being sent.

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

I didn't actually mean it is junk mail as such, its just we get lots of advertisement leaflets, stuff addressed to "The occupier" etc. its not always possible to send it back. So I work on the principal that if they clog my letterbox with crap i'll clog their post boxes with it.

As long as nothing on it contains my address..

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

With regards to junk mail sent to your address, open it up and stuff all the junk back to them in their own reply envelope (they get charged everytime one is used).

Anything that doesn't have a reply envelope, find the address on their literature, and send it back to them too (without a stamp), they'll then have to pay money to collect it from the post office.

They'll soon get the message.

Re: Junk mail and a solution?

My Mum got really tired of junk mail and saved the pre paid envelopes. She then mixed up all the letters and sent them to other companies via these.

Worked a treat and the junk mail lessened considerably
