Pensions

Why does it have to be such a minefield, when it comes to enquiring about contributions made during my lifetime?

I've got pensions from different employers knocking about, but trying to discover where they are is a Dark Art.

Surely my NI number should just lead me to a link that puts my mind at ease?

But, shock/horror, this is the best I can come up with.

Never had anything to do with private pensions but don't they, like the local government ones, update you every year?

Do they have your correct/updated address?

Don't assume your state pension will commence on 2nd April 2038, the amount may be correct but they can still screw you over pretty good. But I'm sure you knew that.

If you get the chance to make extra contributions like AVCs (where the NHS matches you) then I'm sure you don't need me to tell you to cane the ****** out of it .

If you mean your state pension, you can indeed ask for a statement which consolidates all contributions to it, wherever they come from.

If you mean private pensions then you'll need to contact each company you've worked for and ask for a statement from each. The statements will most likely show you a fund value, from which you have to estimate what pension it would buy, based on current annuity rates.

If only it were that easy but private pensions are entirely separate from the state pension and your NI No. is only linked to that.

I did not know about the service provided on Verbout's link ^^ but that seems like an excellent place to start.

Edit - I have just spoken to LizR who is an advisor for CA. They get this question all of the time and they go to DWP who will then tell the client, after being told who either the employer or provider was, who to write to - i.e. EXACTLY the same as the site quoted by Verbout.

Why then not take some of the money you'd otherwise be paying into the pension without any return anyway (it would be paying a British person for a British call centre job) and give it to a British charity to support British people in Britain?

Combined all my French ones into a new one
last year and gouv.fr removed tax breaks for
pension payments this year. FFS.

Also brexit will wreak havoc with my
state pension entitlement. ****s.

Good idea, I really like guide dogs for the blind, admirable charity.

^ And, of course, make sure you never buy a foreign car.
