Overpriced Dealers

Today I went to an Alfa dealer to look at a particular car and thought I'd share my experience. The car in question was:

1) The oldest of this particular car I've seen
2) In less than perfect condition, a fair few scratches, worn leather, chips and marks so not very well prepared.
3) The most expensive of the lot I'd seen.
4) The PX on my Alfa was way below anything previously offered over the last month by as much as £1000 and what you'd expect from a car in below average condition.

To make matters worse they weren't up for any sort of deal.

I've looked at 3 of these cars before, 1 private, 2 dealers (one franchise, one independant). So that's what you get from going to a franchise dealer; in my opinion a waste of time. I shall remember for next time.

Anyone else had a similar experience at an Alfa franchise?

Re: Overpriced Dealers

Yes, you think you should be able to get a better product for what you pay, but not.

When you trade in, you get very little for your car and then they sell it on at a much higher price than other dealers would. So it's win win for them

Re: Overpriced Dealers

I'm surprised that the Alfa dealer was offering by far the worst deal. To think they offered far less for my car but would potentially be able to sell it at a premium being an Alfa dealer I'm quite staggered. There PX was lower than glasses below average condition for my car.......it was quite insulting really.

Re: Overpriced Dealers

I'd rather not name them but my car is a 156 JTD Veloce. I've just gone to a site Sell Your Used Car Online For Free - We Buy Any Car which was recommended to me by someone who's used them and they have valued the car at nearly £1000 more than the PX from the dealer.

Re: Overpriced Dealers

Well I have to be honest I used Meridian Milano recently and the price of the car was identical to a car from Motorpoint (Cheap my arse) and the P/X price was £3.5k over what other garages had been offering although this was still only £500 over book price.

So not only are alfa dealers trying to con people but I think you will find this is a common problem in the trade.

Common statement from a dealer - Your P/X oh the last one we had no one wanted and we lost £XX on it after 6 months.

The car your buying - Oh these are great and we have 10 people interested so you had better be quick or we may sell it.

Always the case. When buying a car it always is, according to the dealer, the best thing since sliced bread. Two years down the line the same salesperson will tell you " These were never popular, awful car, can't possibly offer you more than a tenner. '

Re: Overpriced Dealers

I was chringing at the weekend with the dealer trying hard to flog the young boy a 147. I really wanted to say don't be mad and buy a new Alfa, buy one secondhand because you'll be bend you over when you want shot in a couple of years.

I would never ever buy new - lose way to much - the spider was pre-reg and had a great saving over new and a fantastic P/X price.

Re: Overpriced Dealers

You could try again at the end of the month when they need to meet targets/pay the wages.

It must be a tough time to be a dealer though.

Little inventory and long lead times with the factory being closed.
Limited product range for another couple of years.
Glass palaces, new alfa courtesy cars and all the other fixed costs that alfa uk insist they have under their revamp.
<edit>Small market share.</edit>

It seems it's a bit of a no-brainer to buy from independent importers and get it serviced by your local specialist at the moment.

That site just valued my GTV V6 at £1370

A fair point, but if everyone did that then I guess Alfa would pull out of the UK. Which I don't think would be a good thing.

I bought from an Alfa dealer at the end of the month and he could not wait to do a deal on a pre-reg spider.

In fact I saved £3.5k the differnce in P/x value against motorpoint for the same car - only difference was the colour and blue is betterthan silver.
