M25 speed camera WARNING

I just received the following e-mail.

'
Don't say that you haven't been warned.

I have just been informed by a reliable source who works for the Metropolitan Police Service that as from the 15th February 08 all the Speed Cameras in the Variable Speed Limit section of the M25 near Heathrow Airport (JCT 10-15) are going digital, and the activation limit is being lowered.
They are currently the older film type cameras and Set at 90mph when the Variable Limit Signs are not in operation.
The new digital cameras are going to be set at the normal speed limit + 10% + 2mph (80mph + and you're taking a risk basically) when the signs are not in use i.e. national speed limit. I can't confirm the activation limit when the signs are set (variable limits showing) but believe it would be the same 10% + 2mph of the speed shown by the sign at that time.
Please pass this on to anyone you know.
I hope this saves a few of you getting points on your licence!!! '

Re: M25 speed camera WARNING

A few times before I believe. But I've only just read this one. I rarely drive on that stretch of the M25 so I'm not too bothered.

Re: M25 speed camera WARNING

I didn't think it was possible to speed on the M25? The last time I went on there I didn't go above 40mph due to the gridlock...

You seem very certain considering the rest of the www seems to debating this to death.

The only facts at the moment seem to be

a) There are very few cameras in this stretch anyway
b) They are only activated when the speed matrixes are in operation
c) Not many people seem to get tickets

If someone points me to a link that proves otherwise I'll happily accept it.

Re: M25 speed camera WARNING

I'm dubious about this.

I regularly drive that stretch of motorway, and up until last year drove it every day to and from work.

The cameras ARE NOT activated if no speed restriction is posted, you can go through them at whatever speed you like.

If a speed is displayed on the matrix, you can (as a general rule of thumb) go through it at 20mph more and be ok (from my experience). So the whole "They are currently the older film type cameras and Set at 90mph when the Variable Limit Signs are not in operation." is wrong from the off.

This email was probably started by some fool who drives bang on the limit on the motorway and hates being overtaken.

I do that stretch quite often on a Saturday and its usually pretty fast going helped by a lovely smooth surface. Easy to cruise at the suggested speed!

But that article came after the chain email that's circulating and it's only additional info is a 'no comment' from a man at the Highways Agency (a stunning bit of investigative journalism if ever I saw one !)

Re: M25 speed camera WARNING

I was driving on the M25 this time last year between Heathrow and the A30 exit at 6 am and was flashed (two quick flashes) but never received a ticket. Maybe that's about to change.

A friend has a radar detector that is pretty accurate, but it never goes off on the M25. Draw your own conclusions.

So true, especially the bit south of the M4. Wish they'd put the same stuff on all motorways.

I seem to one of a small minority who make any attempt to comply with those speed signs. Clearly, local knowledge indicates that the trigger is currently set very high, if at all.

My Snooper does indicate the 'live' cameras by picking up the RF and some are live even when not indicating less that national speed limit. Does not state if film is in the camera though!
