Madness Hotel WiFi

Take yer pick:
  • Won't connect
  • Connects but can't obtain IP address
  • Unusably slow once connected
  • Service/connection drops every few minutes
  • Overly aggressive firewall

Guaranteed to boil my blood.

4G is fine providing you can get it where you're staying and someone else is paying your data roaming.

Stay in a better hotel, and use VPN. I was getting 60 down, 20 up last week.

3G Dual-Carrier(HSPA) and 3G+ (HSDPA) is good enough for
most apps. Maybe not for streaming videos.

Data roaming is all-inclusive in 1st world countries' tariffs.

Time to move, again?

My phone doesn't have an Ethernet port and neither does my tablet/PC. Other than that, great idea.

You posted it as a rant, you didn't say you needed advice.

But, my advice is to find the nearest Maccy Dee. Nice arabica coffee and decent wifi.

Job jobbed as they say.

Close the thread, as John the Ludite says.

Either you've never looked at Canadian Internet and cell phone plans or you don't think we qualify as a first world country. Actually scratch that as both could easily apply.

Didn't ask for, or need advice.
Did rant.
Wouldn't find me within WiFi range of McDo.
Wouldn't help placating nine-year-old trying to stream some dyed-haired git whilst in hotel anyway.

Apart from that, great post.

Okay, I get it. I'm the only person in the world who chooses hotels with crappy networks.

I'm in Turkey.

What backwater are you visiting to get such lousy internet?

England?

Saturday night we stayed in a B & B on Anglesey. Their wifi is so slow that speed test results are quoted in mb/sec! The owner is getting so pee'd off with this & the failure of four BT "engineers" to solve the problem that's bought a mobile hotspot which he lends to guests . . . getting a mobile signal on Anglesey is quite an achievement!

We've spent about 40 nights in hotels & B & Bs this year; the only problem we've had was with a Hilton group hotel, where the alleged free wifi in public areas just connected to a payment page demanding $10 for 24 hours' access! Free to HHonors members, but only if the room is booked direct with Hilton, which ours wasn't . . . & in any case, we don't really need yet another hotel loyalty card & our experience of Hilton hotels has been, to say the least, mixed.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

Top-Tip: Most US hotel chains give free wifi if you are a member.

Marriot and Fairmont also spring to mind.

The rant was triggered by our recent trip to Italy. We also often stop off in Anglesey on the way to and from the UK and, like Dave, we find the Internet speeds atrocious. At least I haven't been charged for WiFi in a very long time.

There was a clue there!

We have probably half-a-dozen between us, although we mainly use my Best Western & my wife's IHG.
