Driving up the M1 yesterday to attend a meeting and some fat tw@t in a beemer overtakes on the outside lane and then immediately cuts into the 2nd lane. Missed my front end by a few inches and then slows down !! WHY ??? If i had a banger of a car I would have stuck my foot down and buried it up his arse (literally).
2nd beemer on the same stretch of road decided to undertake and realise he was travelling to fast for the middle lane a preceeds to cut me up by pulling in front of me on the outside lane ! After a good old hand gesture he pulled into lane 2 to which I showed him my sign ,,|,, of appreciation.

Have BMW drivers become the idiots of the road ?

Personally I find since I got the Alfa I have more respect for other road users and am generally more considerate than I was before. Perhaps due to the factI am driving a recognised (and respected) drivers car, and folk expect me to drive and behave like a to$$bag.

In life you make judgement on perception and not always on the facts…..or facts based on knowledge from others….

For instance I put my hob on the oven on – do I put my hand on it….?

Why not – I have not assessed the data for myself; I have not measured the temperature it gets…or worked out what temperature my hand can withstand before becoming badly burned or even burned myself to draw on past experience.….

It is an accumulation of knowledge that tells me not to do it….

I feel that when looking at other marques and driving – we have a very similar situation and yes it is petty and yes not all BMW drivers are T0ssers…..

But an accumulation of evidence would suggest they are not as thoughtful as other drivers.

There is an element of arrogance involved in the German brands because the BMW/MERC is sold as a prestige car that has enveloped the idea of superiority over others…based on design, build quality and performance….this culture has stemmed from the second world war and the concept that German engineering will triumph over all…..and to be honest you can hardly deny that the BMW/MERC have not achieved this…..

So to be somebody of stature and to have bragging rights over your mates and peers, you live in the best areas, you go on the best holidays and you drive the best cars….

This is what appeals to those who want to show appreciation for the finer things in life…that are based on monetary and perception of ‘I have made it – I am somebody’

That in itself breeds a kind of arrogance that is sometimes displayed on the road…..

But – I have not all the facts, I do not intend to over analyse the percentages of vehicles that annoy me and work out the demographics and behavioural characteristics….to prove either way the argument on whether BMW drivers are dicks….

I just simply know that putting my hand on my hob when it is on will hurt….:(

sometimes labradors will you bite and some pitbulls are friendly, but I know which one I give a wide berth.

As a business, BMW are interesting, Alfa were making proper racing cars for Enzo Ferrari and others when BMW were making bubble cars and aero engines.

No one can deny they have been successful at what they do.

I think some of the worst driving you see on our motorways are the businessmen in suits, normally alone, often on mobile phones or eating. I think the majority of them are reps, it's their job to be in too many places at once, so they drive like numpties to get where they should have been half an hour ago.

Now these businessmen are usually in a company car, and it's probaby part of a company fleet, picked by someone way higher up the ladder than they.

BMW (the 3 series in particular) are a popular company car, for the status reasons outlined by other posters, they have the image of a successful, high profile company. It's good image to have all your staff driving round in new beemers.

If the company had picked (for example) a fleet of Hyundai Accents, then they'd not promote such a successful image for their business, but given the same constraints placed upon the drivers, this thread may well have been titled 'Hyundai Drivers on M1'

My sister in-law, wanted too keep her old ford, felt comfortable in it with the children etc;.
Management asked her not too park on staff car park, reason for this she had been asked to get a B.M.W. 3`s.
Strange really it`s a French banking company.

I think so mate and this is my reasoning...

BMWs have for some time now been a brand of aspiration for the 'chav generation'. Ownership having been previously equated with success and the Thatcher years. Those seeking ownership of BMWs in addition to possessing 'the ultimate driving machine' may hope to be associated with those values which could not otherwise be ascertained at school at home or at work. Such is the desire for this 'proxy' confirmation of success that they have ceased to remain the exclusive and desirable object they once were, and are now more plentiful that a Ford Focus on the roads of GB (common). The very nature of their sales demographic combined with their proliferation has meant the above quote has become a self fulfilling prophecy.

EG. If there are a lot of a particular car on the road, then it follows the number of *****s that drive that car must increase on a pro rata basis, therefore your chance of having a 'meaningful experience with one also increases" QED

But I'm probably wrong....didn't we feel this way about Volvo drivers 20 years ago ?

Wasn't that because they dawdled and meandered their way along our nations roads without any care or paying any attention at all because their tank was indestructible?

Bit of the old I'm alright Jack mentality?
