Chicken in a basket

Back in the dark old days of the 70s the height of sophistication was chicken ....... in a basket. It was just ordinary chicken but served in a backed so that it seemed sophisticated and up market therefore commanding higher prices.

I had hoped we may have left those bad old days behind but no.

Now we get stupid plates in every eatery. And not just one plate. Multiple dishes.

As an example we went to the pub for lunch today. Not a special pub. Just a pub. A chain pub. It had good beer and decent food. Mrs Idiot ordered a burger.

It was just a burger. But it was served not on a plate but on a wooden platter. WHY!!!!! why why why.

In addition the chips were not served on the stupid wooden platter. They were served in a separate receptacle that I can only describe as a flower pot.

STOP IT. It's not posh. It's not upmarket. This is supposed to be decent honest pub food. All you are doing is chicken in a basket.

It's happening everywhere. No plates. We get slates, wooden platters chips in wire baskets and flower pots.

Enough.

No more chicken in a basketing in ordinary eatieries. Leave this stupidity to Heston Bloomin Blowitoutyourass.

And breath.

Just your friendly neighbourhood Idiot.

Never argue with idiots. They will just bring your down to their level and beat you with superior experience.

Never make fun of a short idiot. It's not big and it's not clever.

Can I interest you in today's special: Prawn cocktail?

You will also soon see chips in miniature wire fry-baskets.

And steak served on slates where the juices run onto the table when you cut into it
is such a clever* gimmick.

Already had chips in wire fry-baskets.

And slates where the food falls off the edge as the waiting staff try to put them on the table because there is no lip to hold so they have to tip the slate to get it down on the table as their fingers are under one side. Unless they want to drop it from four feet up.

It's all chicken in a basket.

Top rant.

When this happens I usually smile and ask for a plate to replace the wood/slate/basket.. worked every time so far

If we all do this maybe they'll cotton on and give up with the impractical non-plate annoyance.....

Lumped in with chicken in a basket. Slates, platters the whole Bloomin Blowitoutyourass lot of it.

Slates are the worst for slopping food on the table. Worse still when it is presented as regional slate as if it is a delicacy that will add to the flavour.

And today in a Mayfair restaurant I saw prawns in a miniature wire basket, to complete the set.

To be fair to wooden platters, they do actually increment the post-mastication experience. Being fundamentally unwashable, they harbour remnants of weeks-old organic matter to interact with the digestive system.

Sizzlers....what are they about?

Used to go in a pub that specialised in bringing the sizzler to the table with smoke and spitting fat spewing all over the place.

A pair of Mrs. V's linen trousers were spoilt by someone else's order passing our table.

That went down well

And indeed why not?

We got 4 big chips in a mini pail with our pub lunch today. I was thinking about the old rant at the time.

OK, in South Africa nobody's served me food on a slate. Guess I should avoid going to eat in some parts of the North West province, where the stuff is mined.

"Is this pepper?"
"No sir, it is regional slate, specially ground up by the chef, to enhance the grittiness of your meal."

I don't mind things in baskets, but slate is nonsense.
