Bad language - is there too much?

I'm not averse to a bit of cussing but I'm just lately surprising myself by getting annoyed and slightly offended by the apparently worsening amount of swearing on AO. Maybe it was Ian's admonition to someone in a recent thread that made me notice it more, or I am just getting to be a grumpy old sod.

Is it too much?

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Probably. If a word is in the swear filter, then that's because you're not supposed to say it, not because the forum wants to see how ingenious you can be with numbers and the like.

Which isn't to say I haven't done it on the odd occasion

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

We're all grown ups, and one would hope we are capable of making argument without resorting to needless swearing.

That said, we're all grown ups, and surely aren't upset by language that we hear every single day of the week

Sometimes a well chosen profanity can help to drive a point home, but when a post is draped in countless curses, the point does get lost a little.

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Hard one to call, but I had to go with too much camp. I don't mind the odd word as long as it is blanked by asterisks, but blatant, more intolerant words are a no-no

I don't know if there is a swear filter, or how effective it is as I've never had cause to see it used

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Don't often get the gist of it with all those funny signs filling in the blanks, so it becomes a disregard, and I just move on, not even thinking about it.

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

That's probably a lesser consideration for me, when compared with the way my keyboard behaves at certain times, of the day when on AO. Worse than naughty words, but when the letters all appear completely wrong when I strike the keys, I wonder if someone is putting a spell on my keyboard, or summat'? Worse than intimated swear words, but I don't care. so there.

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Well I try and not be too bad but lately I have been working late, been very tired and as a resuly my language in general has gone right down the pan.

Embaressed to say but I lost count of the number of times the C word was used today

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Having worked with men whose every third word begins with an "F" I find the language on AO really quite restrained.

The bad language here is very middle class stuff. Now if you've got an angry hairy arsed worker swearing at you after you have dropped something on his foot..you will experience bad language from the top of the Champions League

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

It might be my imagination but I seem to keep seeing the gratuitous use of the tw** word lately and assorted other non-pertinent (if they ever truly are pertinent) expletives, with or without blanks, cropping up.

I don't want to go whingeing to mods but I feel self-conscious PM'ing members, although I have done so recently. I suppose I should ignore it but it is just as bad as sexually explicit or sexist or racist material in its own way and it surely lowers the tone of an otherwise high quality neighbourhood?

Re: Bad language - is there too much?

Swearing has never and likely will never offend me, this of course does depend on how it is used, I have occasionally sworn in a 'joking' manner.

But I blank bits out and only ever use it in extreme circumstances where it would be comical.

Like when Hammy156 referred to Japanese cars as 'Jap Crap' and I told him to 'F off' followed by an angry smiley because at the time I owned a Galant. This of course was then followed by a LOL smiley, so he of course knew I was only joking.

Did it offend anyone? Not sure. Was it meant to? No.

I'm no innocent. I swear myself. I've used it wth blanks for effect and I'm certainly not saying that it is wrong to swear or all people who do so are bad in some way.

It is this.....observation....I guess..that swearing is appearing more often and certain words are not even being partially masked by blanks. I accept this is ridiculous since we all know what tw** or c**t etc probably means.

I just wanted to know how people felt, was I over-reacting, changing in my attitudes perhaps by disliking it when used so much in what should be normal chat.

There is a reason for that Jim that word for some reason doesn't upset swear filters I'm not a techy so I don't know why.

To prove a point **** no offence meant.

There are a few others but my point is if you know how to play the system you can be quite nasty with your langauge

But that's why we have the mods and the report button

Thanks Darren but I know Happy wasn't being deliberately rude to me. He's had lots of opportunities before!
