Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

i won't ever buy one of these things

I can read a map, I tend to prepare my route and I'm prepared that sometimes the unexpected happens

I can usually tell my North from my East and my South from my West - and my internal "map of the world that I inhabit" is pretty sound

I can make judgements and accept the fact that occasionally I have an adventure when I get it wrong

and I'm too tight to spend cash

I used to see it as an affront to my manhood until Mrs R said she'd buy me one for Christmas.

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

It's a difficult one this, isn't it?

Because clearly, as a real man, I can find my way anywhere by pure instinct.

But at the same time, what is more manly than cool gadgets?

I currently don't have a satnav, and I certainly don't need one (see point one above), but I wouldn't rule out me getting one at some point.

Actually, further on point one, occasionally if I'm driving somewhere with Mrs Bazza in the car, and I'm a bit bored, I'll just turn off the route I know and try to find a different, more interesting way. The reason I only do it with Mrs Bazza in the car is that it always annoys her when I successfully find the new way, because she thinks it's a stupid thing to do.

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

Don't have one as I don't really need one but I can see they are useful if you go to a lot of different, unfamiliar places.

I have gotten stuck a few times recently thought, always less than a mile from where I'm going without an A-Z. I've been looking at a PDA for work for a while. If I can get one with sat nav I'd probably go for it so I can keep it in my pocket most of the time but whip it on the odd occasion where i need it.

Being Welsh, a sense of direction is not really part of my genetic makeup so I'm glad we have one

I know my route to work, so dont see the need for one, I plan my route and take a map when I need to venture further afield!

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

I moved country recently so its been a real benefit having the satnav to find my way around - wouldn't use it once I'm familiar enough with an area though as they don't tend to be very smart

Man after my own heart.....

Borrowed a Garmin once to get me to some by-the-way part of Birmingham. Got me there fine, then on the way home it decided to take me off the M40 miles from home so I ignored it and turned it off. I wonder where it would have taken me?

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

I don't think its a question of masculinity - I never have a problem asking directions, particularly when I'm lost. Its just that whenever I've seen people use them they always get sent on the wrong routes, and also I think it makes ones car more of a target by theifs.

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

last time i stopped for directions was trying to find tranmere's ground in 1995 (they didn't even have t'internet then, never mind satnav ). the woman i asked was very nice but (literally) didn't know her left from right. i followed her directions (reversing the right/left for the opposite) and got there perfectly

i only use my satnav maybe once a month, if i'm going to a street i've never been before in a town i don't know very well. i can also say it was a godsend in paris as it enabled me to drive like a maniac (when in rome...) unencumbered by a complete lack of knowledge on where i was going

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

The sat nav was standard equipment on the 166 Distinctive. Even though quite ancient for a sat nav, the system works and yes, I use it when I need to visit a place I never went before.

Re: Are you too macho to use Sat Nav ??

I don't have one. I like getting a bit lost to be honest, so long as I'm not in a rush. Plus, I can usually manage 99% of an unfamilar route perfectly well; it's only when I've got to find a specific street or the final turning that I get lost. Based on that, I couldn't justify buying one. And I like using the local road signs and clues to work out where I am. Sat-nav kinda takes the fun out of it a bit.
