Heathrow, what now?

Should they really be expanding it?

It is one on the worst aeroports to
get a connection through.

Well?

I hate Heathrow airport, but not as much as I hate Luton.

Re: Heathrow, what now?

They should actually slim it down and move some traffic to other airports.

I always fly from Gatwick, and I only fly once in a blue moon, so don't really give a monkey's.

Re: Heathrow, what now?

The best bet for a London airport would be out of central London but on a high speed train route to the centre. It could also be used as a park and ride depot to get cars from out of the M25 to stay out of the M25..

Heathrow is already rail connected through the Heathrow Express service. Trains take 15mins from Paddington, and run every 15 mins. It's a really popular service

Re: Heathrow, what now?

My vote's for building up the other regional airports - you've got to wonder what %age of passengers arriving at Heatrow actually want to go to London. Combined with a highspeed rail link network it should make travel much easier.

But of course it'll never happen - it'd mean too much investment from BAA, the government & rail companies.

Expand it - so they don't think about expanding Gatwick instead

Re: Heathrow, what now?

never flown from heathrow, and don't want to either if what i hear about the place is true. i'll stick to manchester & liverpool thanks

but if it's reaching its capacity (which it is apparently, 98.6% runway capacity, much higher than CDG, frankfurt, schipol) then there's no choice i suppose. there's no point expanding gatwick or luton to deal with heathrow overflow, as the whole point of heathrow is it's a hub into and out of europe. no point flying into heathrow if your connecting flight's going to be at a different airport

i think expansion is a necessary evil, as the cost of building a brand new massive hub airport from scratch would be ludicrous, not to mention the NIMBY-fest of where to put it. just bulldoze slough and expand, it's not like anyone would give a sh*t

Re: Heathrow, what now?

Last three flights have been Humberside ( a breeze)..Stansted (not bad at all) East Midlands (or whatever they call it) .

Have flown into Heathrow twice and spent as much time circling as the rest of the flight getting there..got some lovely views of the Thames estuary..then Reading..then..the Thames estuary again (but closer)..etc etc..What a game. Just close the M4 and use that.

Got snowed out of Leeds Bradford once and was diverted from Edinburgh to Manchester..then had to dig car out of drift at ungodly hour at Leeds Bradford after they bussed us over a very snowy M62.

Leeds Bradford is the only airport I have parachuted into (well it was economy class) (It was a field round the corner if i'm truthful, but it was a bloke landing on the main airfield that put a stop to parachuting there in about 1978/9 or thereabouts)

Re: Heathrow, what now?

i tell a lie, i have flown from heathrow. must've been such a memorable experience dead easy bmi baby manchester-london return. can't remember much about it really, other than very nearly missing the return flight due to west london friday evening rush hour and come to think of it, we did circle london for half an hour before landing. nice view but doubled the flight time, like alfalincs says

Re: Heathrow, what now?

Living near Gatwick I have learnt that a cheaper flight from Heathrow doesn't work for us. It costs more to get there than you spend once you get to your destination.

Good point. But too "joined-up" for uk.gov
methinks.

Re: Heathrow, what now?

I live just out side windsor right under the flight path, obviously i feel that it shouldn't expand, cut night flights etc.
The big joke is the government and BAA saying it's essential, but only for them and their taxes & profit's, the roads cannot simply cope, the rail links are just adequate and lets face it who wants to use pubic transport lugging their luggage in rush hour for a morning flight.

Re: Heathrow, what now?

For it's capacity and volume (not to mention the rather excessive security searches, Heathrow is the best airport in the world.

Just wish they would bulldoze T2 and rebuild that!

T5 should be the end of development at Heathrow. If it's full, then that should be that.. people should pay more or be prepared to be inconvenienced.

Re: Heathrow, what now?

Expand Cardiff, 15 minutes away instead of having to drive 3 hours to Heathrow or Gatwick

Nothing worse than flying back from a long haul destination, then having to drive home ! Only way of getting to Vegas from Cardiff is to fly via Amsterdam with KLM.

On second thought, my house is in the flight path of Cardiff, Expand Heathrow Now !

Does anyone seriously believe the "it has the best transport connections for the whole of the UK?
Do people actually choose to fly into LHR?

We certainly don't - it's very high on our list of airports to avoid. Come to think of it, it IS our list of airports to avoid!

Of course, in avoiding LHR we're denying ourselves the opportunity to fly London British Airways long-haul . . . two for the price of one!

Never in my top five to fly from, why should it be? I have a three hour drive to get there.

I have to set off six hours before my flight is due.

It's good for Britain, ******.

The plan now is to have a ski jump runway!

If that doesn't pan out maybe they'll think about installing catapult launchers?

Then switch back to the ski jump idea.

Am I getting my "Big UK Projects" mixed up?
