Courtesy Cars

Is it OK to 'rag' courtesy cars mercilessly, to within an inch of their mechanical lives?

Last edited by Pud237; 20-11-07 at 22:25. Reason: changed 'wrong' to 'ok' to bring inline with thread title - cheers Kevin

Re: Courtesy Cars

No courtesy cars are an excuse to vent our frustration at the inflated bill the garage is going to give you, and its fun to see how far you can leave tyre tracks as you floor it

I wonder what the average life expectancy of a loan car is? I bet it isn't much!

10,000 miles I reckon... if that !!

My mum's friend brought an Ex loaner from a Renault garage that I'd had out a few times - including two full weeks while they fitted a new engine in my R5GTT - and I didn't have the heart to tell her what a hard life it'd had 'cause she thought she'd got a bargain !!

Re: Courtesy Cars

We used to rag our hire cars where I used to work - bigtime - but that was a few years ago. I don't have courtesy cars very often any more (or hire cars, come to that), but I don't rag the ones I do get. Break them? erm... yup. Maybe maturity kicking in?

Just rag the 156 at every opportunity tho'!

You'd be suprised, full throttle on full lock and they spin up well.

Handbrake turns when its wet and they slide nicely too...

Re: Courtesy Cars

Ah ragging loan cars, what next? breaking windows in bus shelters? No to me its just another example of the mindless destruction and vandalism that blights our lives
Don't forget that there are lots of threads on here complaining that owners cars are seen out on the road being driven by mechanics. The same mechanics who have extra work fixing loan cars that customers have trashed. You can't have it both ways chaps, what goes around ...etc.

So lets just get this totally clear... You're saying that driving a loan car hard puts people in the same class as someone who smashes up a bus shelter

Re: Courtesy Cars

As well as courtesy cars, how about work pool cars? The abuse i've seen handed out to the Toyotas, Fords, Vauxhalls and even Lexuses has been spectacular!

Especially the mate of mine who tried everything he could to get a Transit Pick-Up to powerslide. (He failed.....)

Not driving it hard if thats what you do with your own car, but trashing it and not treating it with the same respect as you expect people to give your car is out of order. So on that level ,yes to me its vandalism and no better than breaking windows.

Depends whose it is. If it's a rip-off outfit like Olds, then hell yeah. If it's a helpful and friendly independent, then no way.

Re: Courtesy Cars

Lets get one thing straight here (and this is absolutely true whether you want to believe it or not)

The garage, when they test drive your car before you pick it up (or if they just fancy nipping round to the shops for a paper and a mars bar) will rag your prized possession Alfa as hard as they can for the journey.

So when they give you a courtesy car, treat it as they're treating your own car....

Re: Courtesy Cars

i drive them harder than i would my own car, maybe even give them a little spanking here and there. but to rag them mercilessly just for the sake of it is taking the p*ss a bit i'm afraid chaps. and let's not forget, broken courtesy cars = an expense for the garage = an expense which will get passed on to their customers through higher prices

Re: Courtesy Cars

Does this count?

First one I got from the Alfa dealer, happened on the first morning I had it,

That'll teach them to give me a Punto

Attachment 32537

Kinda backfired, I had to drive it like that for about 6 weeks*.

Ps, Obviously I didn't do it on purpose

Pps, with me the treatment a courtesy car gets to depends on how good/quick a job they're doing at fixing my car, so as long as they don't annoy me their car should be OK.

*the Punto was not looked after very well

Yes. If you pay loads to insure the damn thing just because your car has failed, why not

Re: Courtesy Cars

Yes. Although I have to admit it was a bit pointless in a Mitsubishi colt.
