I think the argument was that really thick people might not realise that the alternative to staying in was leaving.

It strikes that really thick people vote based on a primitive gut reaction i.e. "keep the immigrants out so there are more jobs or hand-outs (take your pick) for me" plus a good dose of nationalism. They probably have little grasp about considerations of security (worldwide) or the fact that when the economy goes down the plug hole they're going to be far worse off anyway with the government forced to make deeper cuts in welfare.
