Red Top or Broadsheet

The character of a large section of our society is judged by the daily newspaper which they buy/read. The media is an influential tool and certain elements apparently typify a particular 'type' of reader e.g. the white van man with the Sun on his dashboard, the toff with the Telegraph, etc.

What type of newspaper do you buy/read and do you think it identifies or reflects your personallity?

Personally, I buy The Times for its news and commentary and the Daily Record for its coverage of scottish sport. (Otherwise it's a totally myopic, xenophobic pile of tosh! )

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

I gave up with 'news'papers years ago, the only paper bought in the household, there isnt a specific one, is on the weekends and thats only for the tv guide,

mind you, not even that is accurate!

Hmmm. Actually stipulated that as one of four options, but my poll appears not to be a poll for some reason. Oops. Delayed reaction perhaps?

When I can be bothered, I buy The Times. Don't care what is says about me, I like the news coverage, comment and sport.

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

Hardly ever buy a newspaper.

Do get the Observer from time-to-time.

If it's a freebie one on an aeroplane
I take The Financial Times and/or
Libération

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

For interested parties, the options I did intend to post were:

1. Real news and no celeb/nonentity nuisance.

2. Boobs, Gossip, Sleaze and Scandal.

3. A wee bit of both

4. I Don't buy a paper.

Don't buy a paper. Workplace gets a few in, and I'll grab whichever one is on top of the pile and read the last few pages from time to time, but even that usually makes me angry at the level of reporting.

SUnday and local papers only. Sunday Paper is The Sunday Herald - all news no celeb guff and not too many extras that you can't lift the thing up.

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

i buy the times a couple of days a week, and mrs al always gets the sunday times. occasionally buy the manchester evening news to see which local banks have been robbed at gunpoint this week. i hate the tabloids with a passion, i despise everything they stand for, and despair for the uk when i see how many copies they sell. i also hate the daily mail/express with their alarmist rubbish aimed at agoraphobic suburban housewives

Happyman, don't know where it went wrong, but I did get as far as filling in the boxes, setting the questions. Obviously must have hit a wrong key when I attempted to finally submit the post. Still interested to see the response though and it is premature to categorise, but intrigued that no one has yet admitted to being a regular tabloid reader, since they apparently outsell the 'high brow' papers by a considerable margin. Are we all a wee bit snooty, really??!

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

I buy one paper a week, and that is the daily mail on saturday. The paper goes in the recycling though, I only get it for the TV guide which is better than the radio times and it is 30p cheaper

I might read the free evening papers on the way home though on the trains.

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

Just get a paper at the weekends - no time to read one during the week.

Read the Scotsman on Saturdays and the Sunday Herald (on Sunday obviously).

Re: Red Top or Broadsheet

Do you honestly think that about the Daily Mail Ray? Or are you pulling our legs?
It might make sense of some of your views on immigration, what with the Mail's well deserved nickname - The Daily Bigot.

Sorry - I've just read that back, and it sounds like I'm calling you a bigot. I honestly didn't mean it like that. Just that some of your views could be seen as a little xenophobic, and the Daily Mail does it's utmost to engender that type of attitude at every turn.

Yep, a job well done in the last 20 years in Britain. Endless CCTV, neighbours spying on each other, number plate recognition, chip and pin, oyster cards, the ID scheme, biometric passports etc

We're well controlled, and we sleepwalked right into it
