80's/90's Hot Hatches

Which one was your favourite?

Here's mine.

There were so many to choose from, however my all time favourite must be the Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI.

I still think this is a great little car, the styling still looks fresh and it remains a cool car for me.

My memories are that this car was a riot to drive, great gearbox and steering which if I remember rightly was unassisted. The engine revved like the best of them and you could have almost any other hot hatch from a standing start.

I reckon this is the best car Peugeot have ever produced.

Not the performer, but our 205 still runs fine, eighteen years on, with no rust that's visible at all.: Nice group meeting picture, with an interesting array of machinery, by the way.:

I agree about the Peugeot.

I recall a dark metallic green Gti that had a cream leather interior. In its' day, I think it led te class.

Sorry, Golf fans......

I had the dubious honour of having an XR2.

Does a Corrado count as a hot hatch?

If so, that's my vote.

Pug 205 T16. Rarest of the 205's, and fast enough to make the Gti look like a mobility scooter

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

My dad had a Mk3 Ford Capri 2 litre laser, and he sold it and bought a Mk2 Golf GTi 8 valve, as they were all the rage at the time. He really regretted it, he says the capri was a better car and the Golf is very overrated. It was also stolen by joyriders once and broken into another time.

one of my mates had a 16 valve Astra GTE (Mk 2) that was pretty quick but it just didn't handle. i was able to severely kick his ass im my 3 litre 164 on the corners as well as the straights.

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

I had a 205 GTi 1.6 in 1986. Terrific little car and I agree with Alfahorn, probably the best thing Peugeot ever did..even better than the 1.9 which was not so well balanced IMHO. T16 too wild for me.

Oddly enough my next car was a Golf GTi 8 valve, four door with unassisted steering. Better made than the Pug, more refined, and really just a very nice car with good perfromance rather than a 'hot hatch', but nowhere near the character. I enjoyed the Golf, but it didn't give me that 'special' feeling I got driving the Peugeot.

Liked them both, but for very different reasons

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

Throw this in the works for a few sparks.: Always wanted a Cooper 'S' in the 60's. Couldn't find the money, so compromise it was.: The one where you had to jack the engine/transmission up to replace the alternator belt, because the mounting got in the way. See the odd one running about now, sometimes.:

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

I reckon those old Pugs must have been left in the galvanising tank for an eternity. See very few with bad rust problems even now.:

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

I love Corrados however, it doesn't count, it's a coupe.

As for the 205, I would be very tempted to buy one of those.

PS can't do polls as I haven't paid any subs, sorry!

In all honesty, probably me too. No doubt I'd kill myself within moments of turning the key

But there's something endearing about those group B rally cars and their road going equivalents. No matter how brutal or tough to drive, I imagine them to be the pinnacle in fast road driving.

(No doubt If I ever actually got to drive one it'd be noisy, smelly, cramped, bone jarring and damn hard work, but since I'll never get that opportunity I'll go on revering them )

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

Ren 5 GT Turbo - ate Pug 205's for breakfast and a complete hoot to drive. Probably my most enjoyable run ever was in that car. Just not very well put together.

Golf Mk2 8v GTi was a great car - very nimble and well balanced. Not desperately quick but a great all-rounder.

This was the 1.8 GTE I had before the 2.0 16 valve job...

How embarrassing is that

Re: 80's/90's Hot Hatches

I've never had the pleasure of driving a 205Gti. At the time I nearly bought one, but went for the Nova GSi instead, to be honest it was so much cheaper I had no real option. The Nova was great little car, but I just wish I had bought the Pug.
I still might one day, my brother just bought a fully rally prepared 205 1.9Gti, it's a cracking car and cost less than 2k, hey are such a bargain

I had an Astra 1.8GTE for a while too, great engine, so-so chassis and steering.

My entrant would be the Renault 5 GT Turbo 2 Mid engined beastie, I've seen em with 220bhp... in a biscuit tin on wheels
