Re: Lewis Hamilton's move to Switzerland
I think he's leaving the country because the street in Stevenage is named 'Spoiled-Brat Close'
I don't blame him for moving at all, but not sure of his motives in making it public knowledge. The amount of media attention he gets is largely up to him, as his enthusiasm in giving press conferences (above and beyond those imposed by his profession) is solely in his own hands. I detest the 'celebrity' culture (and I'm sure culture is the incorrect word) that we seem to gorge ourselves on in this country. I think Lewis is bidding to take over from Beckham, as this countries leading 'celebrity', and spending time and effort in pursuing this goal can only detract from his professional results. I, for one, would regret this hugely. It's a peculiarly British phenomenon, as people at the top of their chosen profession in most other countries are mostly admired for what they do, and have achieved, without the hysteria that accompanies it here. I would be greatly disappointed to see Lewis appearing on celebrity chef/dancing/singing shows, as it would both lower the esteem I have for him and detract from his performaces on the track.
While I'm at it, why do certain sports people announce their impending retirements before the due time? Are they after a collection, or just begging for more attention? I have nothing but admiration for those who announce their retirement at the moment it actually happens. We had a full bloody year of Murray Walker AFTER he'd announced he'd be retiring at the end of the following season! AND he's still making 'guest' appearances. Doesn't he understand that the word 'retire' means STOP?
