Would you buy a car from Ebay

I keep on seeing people post links about cars for sale on ebay.

However, I'm not sure I'd risk purachsing one from there myself.

How accurate is the description, and would you really want to travel to the other side of the country to find that you've bought a shed...

But on the other hand it is a good way of finding cheap cars just before they become 'classics'.

So, would you buy a car from Ebay?

Yes, but only if I could view and inspect the car before I placed my bid.

Personally I wouldn't - although is the seller allowed you to inspect it before hand I'd might do

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I went to buy one once, was nowhere near as described on the site. I said I wouldnt buy it and the guy got abusive and said a completed auction was a contract and was going to report me (and that condition of a second hand car was subjective). I tried to contact them to let them know what had happened but could not find anyway to contact them. Eventually sent an e-mail but absolutely no response. For that reason I would never buy anything off E-bay again

Bought & Sold !

It's always best to view the car first, check it out !

Know somebody who bought a car once, picked it up, gearbox was knackered.

Then there are the 'to good to be true sales' just avoid !

(Audi TT, one year old, 9,500 miles, one day auction, no reserve, payment only by western union cash transfer).

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

Had my Ebay account hijacked once, they used the account to sell a John Deere Tractor.

Ebay were useless. I had more luck tracking the tractor down through John Deere.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I honestly don't know, I suppose it depends on what your looking for and how reputable the seller is. As has been said before a lot of Traders are now using ebay motors as their preferred method of selling so I suppose I'd buy from them if everything was above board.

Thing is after having my ebay account hacked I just don't trust it anymore and I haven't used it since.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

Every car I've ever seen bought off Ebay had something that would put me off buying it.As soon as I look at such cars my first thought is ,why was it on e bay not in autotrader. They can't be all bad I know and the prices are sometimes attractive, but I always go by the old chinese ploverb ...cheap no good...good no cheap

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I sold my last car on ebay - got 7.5K for it - I was utterly amazed that the guy didn't care about viewing it beforehand. He travelled about 300 miles to pick it up as well. A friend of mine has sold two cars (one of which was a Porsche Boxster) on both occasions the buyers contracted to buy the cars without seeing them.

I would buy from an ebay seller but would not bid until I had viewed the car (and got a test drive)..

TBH I don't really trust e-bay enough to buy anything off it; but then again I used to feel like that about the internet and now I'm happy to make purchases from it

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I work with the internet all day everyday (sell websites, including shopping carts) and even though I know ours are secure I wouldnt buy off the internet unless I knew they were using a secure payment provider. The number of sites I have done business with where their old site just had an area to put your credit card details in and they were just e-mailed as per contact form for the vendor to put through a swipe machine was scary.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

A lot of ad's are full of assertions that the car has just one or two minor faults (with photos to prove) so it's fair to assume that they're fairly pukka. I bought the Younger Mrs S. a Uno that was splendid and when that was killed in action, her Cinq' came off the 'Bay too. No trouble at all.

You have to read what the seller says and also what they don't say, then make up your mind. If the description doesn't match reality, then you can legitimately get out of it but if in doubt, go and have a look at the beast before bidding.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I have bought 2 cars on ebay, bought and sold 1 motorbike all with various results.
Bought a Corsa 2 years ago for my daughter to learn to drive with cost £1,000, has been brilliant and now is being passed to my younger daughter.
Bought a Ssangyong Musso (big 4 wheel drive thing like a Shogun), lasted about 10 months and died cost £2k sold £700.
Motorbike bought 4k bargain, sold 2 years later for 4k.

We as a company have also bought/sold about 20 cars bike as a trader...again with various results

Would suggest a few points, check V5 is with the person selling, check their ID as they can say they are Mr... but its stolen. INSIST it has a NEW MOT, as this will show up areas of concern re condition.
Check for water in oil on dip stick, and oil in radiator water.
Ensure they confirm ALL damage and items of concern. If still unhappy walk away but you risk bad feedback and a long trip for nothing.

Frankly if the car is under £2k dont expect great things, if its over that ie £4k plus then we always use the car centre in Scrubs Lane in London.

Happy hunting

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I too have bought & sold cars & a motorbike on Ebay. The basic rule is not to buy a car from the other end of the country (you generally wouldn't on Autotrader, so why do it on Ebay?). Always go & see whatever you're interested in - a lot of traders use Ebay as a cheap advertising tool, so you go along & see the car, drive it, then buy it directly if you like it. Any car I've sold on there has been genuinely described, which has been my downfall - it it has been resprayed, I'll say it. If it needs anything doing, I'll say it. As a result I'll never be an Ebay millionaire - but I wouldn't want to be. Nothing wrong with Ebay (apart from the odd scammer / hijacker - if something appears too good to be true, it probably is).

The cheaper the car, the less risk involved. However, still go & see it first.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

I have bought a few, and work under the assumption that if a car is not as described then I won't buy it.

Its a bit like a normal Auction, there are chances of bargains and chances of a shed, though there is more comback than a normal private sale. Just pay cash on collection and no deposit until you have seen the car.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

It depends on what type of car you're after, if its a cheapie then you get what you pay for, and if you don't do your homework first then so be it, take the chance, but view it if you can. But if its not as described, or has some faults you can't correct or live with then walk away, after all what can they do? Its only feedback after all. Pay their listing fee, apologise and move on.

I've sold and bought cars using ebay and to be honest its no different to autotrader and other places if you use a bit of common sense. You get some good items on there. Many traders tend to use it instead of autotrader now and not just to get rid of some old trade in either!

Be sensible, be safe.

Re: Would you buy a car from Ebay

A year ago I sold my Fiat Multipla as a classified and bought the GT.
Fair value each way, and now am considering selling the GT. Ebay was OK for me.
