Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

So who is going to win this battle? Kind of like VHS vs Betamax for the modern age.

Has anyone bought a HD-DVD player/Blue ray player?

I am just a bit curioius as this time I wonder if both will pervail in some way, what with the PS3 supporting Blue ray and the XBOX having a cheapish HD-DVD option

Not fussed as I saw there will be a release of the dual format player
Might be out already. This is something I dont believe there was in the VHS vs Betamax days.

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

They couldn't decide a format between them?
Well **** em then.

No way I'm buying one of those and re-buying
stuff I've already bought on VHS and DVD.

Will sadly end up with dual-mode.

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

Discs are already obsolete for me. I play pretty much everything off my PCs hard-drive, music and DVD video. As soon as I buy a DVD it's ripped straight to the computer's hard drive, flicking through a film/ music collection is so much easier with a mouse than using physical discs.

Don't care who wins the war, I just wish someone would make the decision and go with one or the other so the public can start investing in it instead of sitting by and waiting for a clear winner. It's this decision that's holiding the technology back right now.

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

I think it will eventually go down the Blu-Ray route, leaving HD and even dual format players redundant.

As for the current selection of DVD's in ones collection - all the players will play and upscale old DVD's, so the old collection is still playable.

I know that some studios have taken sides and are distributing either HD or Blu Ray releases only, but I believe that they will all be available on the winning format or on both formats.

Historically the format wars have been won by whichever format the porn industry used. There are more porn video's sold than any other genre so they have the greatest market influence.

What He Said.

Although do you really want to see porn
actresses in HD? Warts and all. (Literally.)

Dual format players are already out there. There will be no VHS/Betamax battle his time around...everyone will win

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

I've got a PS3 so I'm backing Blu Ray. All the major film studios are backing Blu Ray as well (except Paramount).

Since Blu Ray discs have 10 times the storage capacity of HD the potential for games / extra features / better quality films is far greater

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

Don't care and not interested. I'm happy with DivX movies, 2hrs = 700MB perfect quality (well, for me anyway).

And I watch them on my Elonex 17" CRT monitor, that has a chipped screen

EDIT:: Would rather spend the money on car bits, or getting a second car - you could do for the price of a brand new TV!!

Yep, the same technology in a few years will be a fraction of the price it is now.

For the money of a new HD TV and Blue Ray/ HD DVD player my Alfa would go very fast!

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

The first dual player below A$250 will probably win here (ie less than 100 UK quid)

10 times...where'd you get that information??

Blu-ray: 25 GB (single layer), 50 GB (dual layer)
HD-DVD: 15 GB (single layer) 30 GB (dual layer)

I can't see even 20% of that capacity being used for games...at least not in the near future. HD-DVD is actually the preferred format for movies, more specifically special feature and options as it's easier to work with apparently.

I should also mention that there are HD-DVD/Blu-Ray hybrid discs being launched.

Wikipedia is a wonderful thing.

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

Same as a few guys above - I have a PS3 so have gone the Blue Ray route. Heartily recommend 300 on blue ray. Much better than the slighty dodgy copy I had before!

Re: Blue-ray or HD-DVD??

Neither will win, they'll both co-exist quite happily until the downloading of movies pegs them back and overtakes them both.

Which is a shame, because I find paying money for music or a movie a bit irritating when I'm not getting something physical and chunky like a CD or DVD in a nice black box to put on display

I even get annoyed when i buy a dvd that doesn't have a decent sized booklet inside the case lol

Dual format should squash this one. Betamax was great.:

Apparently Sony have won the adoption race with Blue Ray. Toshiba lost out.
