EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

Gordon has signed the new EU reform treaty, should we in the UK have a referendum on whether the country accepts it?

Yes! there should be a referendum-Europe has far too much influence on the UK without us giving Brussels any more powers.

May they offer us one eventually? It's rather too large now, this whole EU thing I feel. Can we please turn the clock back to '75 was it, with a referendum?

Re: EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

I think a referendum is a waste of time and money. Turn out will be low and a discussion about the Treaty muddled and confusing to follow in the media.

Leave it to the pros to deal with it. Afterall, politicians should be doing some work.

Or maybe better not and lock 'em all up

Thing is, GB knows he would loose this Referendum, thats why he does not want to hold one.

This smacks of Dictatorship to me, its not as if the govenment can be trusted either to make the best decisions, look at the iraq war.

Yes we were promised a referendum; and this document covers the same ground as the constitution

Yes we need a referendum now, more and more people are becoming disillusioned with this this country and that can be dangerous, imagine a civil war in........no what am i saying the British are happy to sit and take anything, here have our country, here have our money , here have our jobs and housing now take our laws and change them any way you like

Correct - can't blot his copy book yet not when the 'election' word is still hanging around his head.

There probably should be a referendum, but even if there were to be one, it wouldn't change any course of action already decided upon.

Welcome to 21st century democracy.

Re: EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

No.

2 reasons

1) That's not how politics are set up in the UK.

2) Informed debate is not possible due to the
Murdoch media's anti-Europe pro-US stance.
(He likes the hands-off screw anyone you want
approach to consumer rights' in the US as
opposed to the ***** slapping the EU will give him.)

Just have to see the "Gor-Blimey-they've-banned-our- sausages/bananas/whatever!" headlines to understand
the blatant Murdoch propaganda machine is in full swing
24/7.

c*ckhead Brown as signed away the all important Veto Power which Maggie spent ages arguing for. It is one of the most critical parts of the deal we got when we entered the EU. Without it the UK's rights are seriously impoverished. We already support the poorer EU countries with billions of pounds of tax payer money per year, now we can't even veto new laws which will directly affect us. I wish we had the will to get out of this EU farce, the European countries are not going to stop trading with us as they need the trade as much as we do. In theory all we need to do is revoke the act which we passed in the first place under which we signed up to the EU in the first place...

I agree with you Commanderfish. The EU hasn't done us many favours in the years since Maggie.

Re: EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

A Prime Minister who has never been voted into power in a general election thinks he can speak for the people.

There should have been a referendum, but he is so blinkered after the many years in power Labour have had that he feels he has a divine right to speak for us all.

Re: EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

No - we live in a parliamentary democracy where we choose to elect representatives to govern on our behalf. If there were to be referenda on each and every topic, there would be anarchy - another system entirely.

Vin
The Labour party manifesto at the last election included a pledge to hold a referendum on the EU constitution. They were elected on that promise and they should stand by it.

They claim that we don't deserve a referendum is because this "treaty" is not the EU constitution, although a large part of it is exactly the same, word for word, as the original constitution agreement rejected in France and Holland. Its an absolute scam, I think the Conservatives should pledge to hold a referendum on whether or not to keep it should they be elected, that would certainly win them votes.

Re: EC reform treaty. Should we have a referendum?

no we should not. We vote in our parliament/government and its their job then to do whats best for the country... hmm (?!?).
I also doubt (as Nev) said that we would get a fair presentation of whats actually in this treaty due to an often biased media, and all arguments which do get aired will descend into name-calling, and scare-mongering... cause thats what always seems to happen in politics.
I also think its laughable to beleive the other political party(s) would behave any differently

Indeed, but our politicial system is hardly what I would call true democracy. Even so its a fairly good compromise.
