Idea Antishesis of an Alfa

Had a revelation on the way home from Glasgow today when I followed an Audi S4 Avant for a bit. It struck me that Audi is surely the complete antithesis of the Alfa model. Sure, the S4 is a great car but it looks entirely bland and it's efficient and soul-less. In my experience (and only in A6, A4 and A2 form I'll grant you) they are the most boring cars to drive for a brand that claims to have sporting pretentions. They are "nice" to sit in and "nice" to look at, but they are utterly devoid of passion or that special something.

What would you consider to be the antithesis of Alfa and why.

EDIT - noticed the edit tool won't let you edit the title. Oh well

Its got to be "Korean style" cars for me. Cheap, nasty, get you from A to B. Audi's, Mercs, Beemers, all have their differences to Alfa's, but a lot of us are car enthusiasts as well as being Alfisti and can see the good sides of all but the last option on your list.

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

Have to agree with you there Fraser.

I think it's something to to with their ex boss, who made all the VAG cars like they are. He who when asked the question "How many children do you have?" replied "About 14" as he couldn't actually recall offhand.

All of them (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda) now produce the same car in a different wrapper. Not too bad if the resultant car wasn't something you wanted to thrash to within an inch of it's miserable life purely to give you the opportunity to end it's misery humanely.

I've just realised I must dislike Audi's more than I thought

We have no plan, therefore nothing can go wrong (much)

And i Have finally put piccies of the silver one on!!

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

The Citroen Xsara Picasso is the polar opposite of everything Alfa Romeo stands for. It is designed with a purity of purpose that the Germans would be proud of - it is designed solely to transport a family from A to B with absolutely no intention whatsoever of making the journey an event which may be of some enjoyment to the driver (or anybody else for that matter). Furthermore it is designed with no attempt whatsoever to have a single redeeming visual feature, in fact one could be forgiven for thinking Citroen modelled it on a toddler's soft toy for added "mumsy" appeal. It truly is a disgusting thing to look at. Familiarity always tones down the ugliness of any car yet, despite the fact that Picassos are everywhere, their ugliness plumbs new depths every day.

One of the TG writers (Clarkson, probably) summed it up perfectly - Picassos are bought buy people who hate driving.

So, they're ugly as sin, they offer no driver enjoyment whatsoever, they are intended to transport things from A to B with no joy. They are aimed at women who wear jeans with high waists.

Find me a car more opposite to an Alfa than one of those piles of cat sick and I'll bear my arse in Woolworths window

You've left off the Japs,or are they lumped in with kia?Surely a car designed purely as a piece of equipment,to do a job, like a washing machine or a fridge,is enough to give Alfisti nightmares!!

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

I think Al picked the perfect example with the totally souless Picasso thing and I've often thought how awful it would be to have to drive around in one of those things,I reckon I would be suicidal. Even when our kids were young our car still had to have something in it for us and not just practicality.

At least the picasso and kia things are honest - they do what they're supposed to do.

I have to disagree there Dan, my dad's recently bought one of those Ssangyong Rexton 4 x 4's and he got all the spec of a BMW X5 but at 1/2 the price.

It's jet black with all the chromings and that and looks spot on in my book. I know there was a Thread a while back with one of their 4x4's and it did look crap, but it wasn't this one. I promise.

I voted for Vauxhall personally because I actually love both BMW's and Audi's.

Sorry!

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

I see where you're coming from Darren. At least the Rexton is attempting to be prestigous. My mum drives a 999cc 3cly Kia Picanto, which isn't attempting to prestigous, to put it nicely.

These are the car's I meant, not the 'posh' Korean ones...

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

The Rexton may be a case apart but most of the J-models are pretty much "appliance" cars. Nothing too offensive about the styling (I use that term advisedly), nothing too cutting edge about the engines or handling and nothing too unpleasant about the interior.

They get you from A to B and "never go wrong" (so why don't you see very many OLD ones? Maybe they don't inspire anyone to keep them going...?)

80-percentile cars for 80-percentile people.

The case for the prosecution rests, M'Lud.

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

The antithesis on My 156 has to be a Citroen C5 Diesel we have at work as a company car. It rides ok on the motorway, but is soft on the corners, the steering is numb, the engine note is crap, it is slow and looks pig ugly.
It is even a lot less reliable...

Other than that many Korean cars would fit the bill. Audi does somewhat, but I like the look of the R8, and to be honest the new TT looks sort of OK if you squint a bit.

Wow, tough choice Fraser - difficult because I think you got it from the outset but in the end I voted Vauxhall - do what they should, plenty of sporting pretention but just fail to deliver. Did nearly pass into a coma driving an A6 once, but that does not purport to be anything other than teutonically bland.

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

Hmmmm

I can't say Audi or BMW or Merc. because some of their cars have been okay. I remember my Dads Audi 80 and it was a nice car - but that was it - 'nice'

I have to say a couple of 'people carriers' past me today and i muttered to myself 'Thank God I don't have to drive one of those...'

Even my wife agrees - when we changed the 156 she just said to me it has to be an estate and I said well it has to be an Alfa - result - a 159 SW

So yeah, 'people carriers' - it seems to me that as soon as people have children they rush off and buy one - I nearly did it myself - baby fever I put it down to. Thankfully I waited a year.

As an example, our ex-next door neighbours had one little girl and a Citroen thingy - they then changed it for a 407SW

Then again we did take my PiLs Touran on holiday and it was good for that - got us from A to B with children and lots of stuff (this was pre 159SW however so it won't happen again).

Previous: Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXi -147 1.6 TS Lusso - 156 1.8 TS - 159 2.4 JTDm Lusso SW - 159 1.9 JTDm Lusso saloon - 159 1.9 JTDm Lusso SW - 159 2.0 JTDm Ti SW - VW Golf TDi - Fiat Bravo Multijet Sport - Volvo V70 2.4D SE Lux - Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 GP - Skoda Superb 2.0D DSG L&K Estate - Now: 159 2.0 JTDm Ti SW & Giulietta 1.4 MA QV-Line

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

I'll go for Mercedes.
Other cars Kias etc. are designed to serve a different purpose.
Your Merc is made for people who want status over soul, passion, character, beauty, driving experience etc.
Sorry if I have offended anyone.

Re: Antishesis of an Alfa

Kia and their ilk, maybe Skoda too. The Koreans make good cars, my dad has two hyundai. But they are boooooooring!!!!

I think the main reason he hasn't driven my 156 is he would see what is missing, I keep offering him the keys!

We got a bunch of those in here but why must they put handling by lotus? the steering is as numb as a crack overdose, but the the Neo is not that bad apart from the quality, engine of course. Proton has a tall ladder to climb to compete even with the Koreans. Proton just launched their new Persona and I think it's rubbish! Its a sedan Gen2

btw take a look! http://paultan.org/archives/2007/08/...sedan-details/

I htink it has to be Kia - there is no positive thing to say about them, they are just 'white goods' as Clarkson says...
