Do you own a bowler hat?

It's the stereotypical view of
a Brit: Works in an office has
an umbrella and wears a bowler hat.

So, do you?

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

Wow - this is a great poll!!! I really wished I thought of it

I did use to want to have one; but that was one I was between the age of 5 - 7 ; so I'm afraid I don't

My hat wearing is limited to a Tilley Sun hat, a Tilley Winter hat, and a Panama when I'm gardening

You say that, but I've met yanks who think
not only that Londoners go to work like that,
but they do so having to also endure "Pea-Souper" smog.
(A la Sherlock Holmes movies.)

Anyway if you didn't guess this is a bit of a rib at the Umbrella poll.

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

Absolutely and I love it. It's a dark brown one that I bought years ago to go with a long departed winter coat. It's very stylish when worn properly and with the correct ensemble, and that means not using an umbrella at the same time.

Yes Nev, I realize the poll is lighthearted, even if my answer is completely serious.

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

We once had a niece from Switzerland who stayed with us .... she was about 17 and wore a bowler on top of her very --- very purple hair ... she thought she looked stylish (I guess)

It was about 10 years ago.... I guess she's grown up a bit now

It only took about a week to get the purple stains out of the bath

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

Well as all the fashionistas will tell you, the best way to adapt an old (and possibly dated) classic is to change it up a bit. So with my hat, a different colour and slightly different outline (a bit broader brim and a bit flatter top) modernizes the hat and makes it very wearable. It's still a bowler by any definition, but it's not the stodgy, stereotyped chapeau that is so easily mocked.

Dear Ferret,

Brown bowler! Is this what we won the war for?

You hold the cad while I go get my gun. We'll teach the bounder that style never goes out of fashion.

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

Nothing wrong with the classic, black version, moorelaat. I do believe there is a time and place for those to be worn. Sadly I just couldn't get a traditional one to work in the Canadian winter, especially when paired with a brown coat.

I'm a big fan of the classics, but I'm enough of a pragmatist to realize that a tiny bit of adaption or evolution has its place too. Pant legs and lapels both change widths over the years, and colour selections modify with time. Sometimes you just have to adapt, especially when buying new garments.

I do have a black fedora that does go wonderfully with a grey coat.

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

I used to, but I lived in Canada then ... explains a lot!

I used to wear hats a lot in my younger days -- fedoras, a trilby, even a homburg...

Erm, I'll get me coat...

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

No..but I do have a straw boater hat..which in my youth could be worn at a jaunty angle...now there's posh for you.

Never went boating in it though.

Tried wearing a flat cap for a while..not really me though, and now I just wear broad brimmed sun hats or even rain hats..same hat different weather..when I am a) somewhere hot b) Sailing c) somewhere wet. the drips drip off you..not run down you. Very useful earlier this year when i was sailing through a thunder storm one night

Had a couple of full face crash hats when I was a motorcyclist..but don't suppose they count..and I have two hard hats for site work in my van....

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

AlfaLincs, you've got exactly the right idea. It's all about finding a hat that works for you. Keeping the snow or rain or sun off is the prime concern. Style is secondary.

Re: Do you own a bowler hat?

I don't have a bowler hat - although I did once have a top hat, until one of my nephews broke it

I now have a tilley hat (a proper mans one, not the narrow brimmed woman's one that Kevin wears) for summer, a panama for when visiting France, and a Drizabone wax hat for when its raining. I also have quite a few baseball caps, but I tend not to wear them that much anymore since buying the tilley hat.
